Installation of Kanotix

This article was tested succesfully with the following Kanotix versions:

• Kanotix Excalibur
• Kanotix Hellfire

1. Welcome message and install type

Kanotix uses the installer of Acritox. You can run the installer in Kanotix Live-Mode. It is located in K-Menu -> Kanotix -> Acritox Installer.

The installer starts with a welcome message and a warning. But the installer works pretty good at all and fits the most use cases.


With "Next" you can choose between normal installation or recover.

2. Partitioning

Next you have to choose the partitioning. You can choose between manual partitioning and some automatic install choices. I prefer the manual option where you can run common partitioning applications like GParted.


I don't want to explain all the details how to use GParted for the job so the next few screenshots shows only some major steps. First select the correct device to install (top left drop down list e.g. /dev/sda).


Create a new partition with a Linux compatible root file system (e.g. ext4?). Repeat this step for additional partitions (e.g. external /home partition).


Finally it could look like that where I created a root partition and and additional one for my /home directory.


If you choose the manual option the installer waits for you until your partitioning is finished. Proceed with "Next".

3. Swap status

The installer analyses your swap status and recommends some adjustments if necessary. In most cases there are no adjustments needed.

4. Partition mapping

Here you have to select the root partition. On advanced partition options you can map existing partition to mount points. You need that to set up a seperat /home partition for example.



Here you can enter mount points for your partitions, check auto mount option and whether the partitions should be formated with a supported filesystem. Double click to edit or enter a mount point and VERY IMPORTANT confirm your mount point editing with Enter.

5. Bootloader configuration

Next is the bootloader configuration. Kanotix uses Grub 2∞ as bootloader. You have to select the installation target. Usually you use the Master Boot Record (MBR) of the first device as installation target. But you can choose also the root partition.

6. User configuration

The user configuration starts with the root user password.


Thereafter the installer creates the first user account. Type in the user name and user password. Who wants can enable KDM auto login option.

7. Hostname

Type in your prefered network hostname for your computer.

8. Confirmation and installation

Finally you get a list of all configured settings. If everything is as expected confirm the install now box and start the installation.


The installation process takes only a few minutes.


If you the installation is finished you can restart your computer and remove the installation media (e.g. Usb-Stick).
