Windows does not Start, after the installation of Kanotix
Symptom
You had some version of Windows installed on your hard drive and it worked. Kanotix (and possibly different Linuxes) start marvelously, however, trying to select your Windows entry in GRUb gets you either no error message or you get the GRUB shell and something like this:
root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x7
chainloader +1
and the PC stops here.
An attempt to fix this with the Windows CD and
fixmbr and/or
fixboot (
WinXP? and W2k) fixes the obviously defective MBR again, but that brings no solution. On the contrary, now Kanotix is gone! It didn't even help me to lowlevel format the hard drive!
Cause:
A cause for this is probably QTParted which most probably did not write a completely correct partition table. A further role is played by the bios in your computer. If this is somewhat older it can only address the first 8 GByte of your hard drive,
a problem arises, if
the BIOS and LINUX "see" different disk geometry AND
the Windows partition is larger than 8GB
(and/or the first partition has reached up to or over the 1024th cylinder).
Solution:
Either, update your Bios to a more current version
or, . . . set the access mode for the hard drive of the computer in the BIOS to "Large" and/or "LBA".
This setting must not be set to "Auto"!!
This has helped me wonderfully!!
