Cause:
A cause for this is probably QTParted which most probably did not write a completely correct partition table. A further role is played by the bios in your computer. If this is somewhat older it can only address the first 8 GByte of your hard drive, a problem arises, if
the BIOS and LINUX "see" different disk geometry AND
the Windows partition is larger than 8GB
(and/or the first partition has reached up to or over the 1024th cylinder).
Solution:
or, . . . set the access mode for the hard drive of the computer in the BIOS to "Large" and/or "LBA".
This setting must not be set to "Auto"!!

Windows does not Start, after the installation of Kanotix

You had some version of Windows installed on your hard drive and it worked. Kanotix (and possibly different Linuxes) start marvelously, however, trying to select your Windows entry in GRUb gets you either no error message or you get the GRUB shell and something like this:
 root (hd0,0)
chainloader +1
and the PC stops here.
An attempt to fix this with the Windows CD and fixmbr and/or fixboot (WinXP? and W2k) fixes the obviously defective MBR again, but that brings no solution. On the contrary, now Kanotix is gone! It didn't even help me to lowlevel format the hard drive!

Windows does not start anymore after the installation of Kanotix

Symptom
You had some version of Windows installed on your hard drive and it worked
Kanotix (and possibly different Linuxes) start marvelously however trying to select your Windows entry in GRUb gets you either no error message and get the GRUB shell or you get something like:

:code:root (hd0?,0)
Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x7
chainloader +1:code:
The PC stops here.

An attempt to fix this with the Windows CD and :blau:fixmbr:blau: and/or :blau:fixboot:blau: (WinXP? and W2k) fixes the obviously defective MBR again but that brings no solution. On the contrary, now Kanotix is gone! It didn't even helped me to lowlevel format the hard drive!

Cause
A cause for this is probably QTParted which most probably did not write a completely correct partition table. A further role is played by the bios in your computer. If this is somewhat older it can only address the first 8 GByte of your hard drive. Because:

the problem arises, if

the Windows partition is larger than 8GB (and/or the first partition has reached up to or over the 1024. cylinder)

Solution
Either can update your Bios to a more current version or
You set in the BIOS of the computer the access mode for the hard drive to :blau:"Large":blau: and/or :blau:"LBA":blau:. The setting must not be "Auto"!!

This has helped me wonderfully!!
