Titel: Kanotix with KDE and GNOME
Hi everyone, I've been running Kanotix 2006 Easter RC-4 for some time, and I have installed GNOME to run also with KDE as an option. My question is:
Is it stable to run Kanotix with two GUI?
My question comes up because each time I quit GNOME I dont see the shotdown/restar screen. I only get a logout screen wich takes me back to the login screen again.
Is that normal? I should be able to turn off my system quiting from GNOME like in KDE.
Thanks for any reply.

I have Gnome installed, too. If you use GDM instead of KDM the option to restart and shutdown are active from the gnome menu.

I think my previous reply failed so if you get it sorry for replying again.
Now I have some more questions!
So if I pick GDM (Gnome display manager) for running Kanotix I will have KDE just as an option in the GDM login screen menu as I have now Gnome in the KDM menu login screen? Is that correct?
If so, is there any display manager to download or configure so I can pick between one GUI (Graphical User Interface) or the other (Gnome or KDE) without havin one or the other DM login screen?

Probably my questions sound a little dumbs and my definitions of some terms in brackets to, but I'm a new linux user and I, as many other people, we come from using Windows for many years with very few options handling the OS unless you have programing abilities and we need some clearence about it. Linux gives me the option of doing what ever I want and feel and one of them is having the choice of more than one GUI.

Thanks

Been awhile since I used Gnome, I think top left corner -> Actions should give you a choice to reboot, shutoff, I believe you would select reboot/shutdown and then your root password and it then reboots/shutsdown, I could be wrong, it has been awhile.

I only have the Logout option. After pressing it, the system takes me back to the KDM login screen. No "shotdown system" in Gnome without swapping to GDM? Is this normal?

Thanks piper

I don't use Gnome but you can always shutdown your machine from the command line.
Code:
su
shutdown -h now

OR
Code:
halt

should also work.

Correct. It does not matter which log in manager you choose. Either will let you choose any desktop that you have installed including but not limited to KDE, Gnome, FLuxbox, XFCE4, Enlightenment or any other window manager/desktop environment you wish to use.

That was very clear, thanks again guys.
Probably a multi-GUI manager program would be something nice to use, if there is any.
Thanks

For Kde use Controllcenter than loginmanager and mark the option enable shutdown in K-Menu. Similar option should be in Gnomecontrollcenter. But here it is not a mark but a value "true"
