General Support - Problems running live cd.

Titel: Problems running live cd.
I tried booting from the Kanotix 2006 easter cd. Burned with Nero in windows using DiskAtOnce and speed 8x to a verbatim 40x datalifeplus media. The cd/dvd writer is a LiteON SOHW something.
After choosing the second startup option from the main screen kanotix seems to loop through my harddrives and end up in an error something like: cannot find file system.
I also tried testcd by backspacing all the text in the boot screen and writing only 'testcd' and pressed enter. I am not sure if that was the right way. Well it started something and ended up stopping to a point where there were some nags about hda2 and alike.
I burned the cd same way as I burned my knoppix live cd. And knoppix is running fine. But I have not been able to run Slax, Ubuntu, PuppyLinux ... and the list goes on. Knoppix and DamnSmallLinux are the only ones that I have gotten to work for now.
Any ideas how I could get the Kanotix live cd working. Once I get the live up and running I will try installing it.

append testcd to the grub bootline and try again.
tell us, what that gives exactly.

It's probably a corrupted ISO file (but, I'd use Devil's instructions to check the CD since you've already burned it).
I'd check the md5 checksum of the ISO file for any distro you download before risking a burn.
One free tool to do this with Windows is here:
http://www.nullriver.com/index/products/winmd5sum
Just point it at the ISO file you download and it will calculate the md5 checksum.
Then, copy and paste the correct checksum into the second box and press Calculate and it will compare the values.
It's a good idea to do this with any distro you download, as you do get bad downloads pretty often (at least I do).
When you look at mirrors for a distro (almost any distro), you'll see a separate file that contains this md5 checksum.
Here it is for 2005-04:
http://debian.tu-bs.de/kanotix/KANOTIX-2005-04/KANOTIX-2005-04.iso.md5
Here it is for 2006-easter-rc4:
http://debian.tu-bs.de/project/kanotix/preview/KANOTIX-2006-Easter-RC4.iso.md5
So, if you're trying 2006-easter-rc4, you'd copy the md5 checksum from this file (it's just a text file) into the second field of the winmd5sum program I posted a link to above before pressing compare to see if it matches with the ISO you downloaded. There are probably plenty of other tools that can do the same thing (it's just one I found a while back). Here is what you'd copy from it for 2006-easter-rc4)"
c10e91895ad111553a6ad765c16f17a1
If it does match, then the download is good and you probably got a bad burn.
I use the free version of Deep Burner from Windows to burn ISOs with.
http://www.deepburner.com/?r=download
I've also got a Lite-On drive and I typically select a 16x burn with it (it seems more reliable than 8x for some odd reason) using 52x CD-R media and I never get a coaster with it that way.
I'd probably check to see if you've got a corrupted download as a first step before wasting any more media if the burn is bad. If so, just try downloading it again.

Yeap the MD5 checksum did not match! I will try to redownload the iso. Is it possible to dowload the iso with bittorrent? Where can I find the torrent file? (Incase I get another corrupted file.)
It is going to take quite a while for me to download the iso again. But I will post back if I still encounter problems.

I made a little mistake while checking the MD5. It matched.
Now I appended the testcd but still got the same error:

let us know something on yer hardware first.
and try booting with appending failsafe as cheatcode to bootline and see, what that gives.

Tried, but it did not change the errors that I got.

O.k., one more idea: Start windows and copy the Kanotix iso file to the root directory of windows drive C:. The file path should be C:\KANO*.iso.
Then boot again off the Kanotix cd, but this time add cheat code "fromiso=KAN*.iso" to the line of boot commands. This will instruct Kanotix to mount the iso file instead of trying to access the external drive.

Thank you this worked. My next project will be to install Kanotix on harddrive.
1) I can make an unpartitioned are for Kanotix in windows, but how big should I make it (I'm not planning to put any large music or movie files on it.)?
2)Is the install process simple or is there something I should know?
3) I can use the live cd to install, right?
4) Will I need to add the "fromiso=KAN*.iso" when installing as well?
5) When I ran the live cd I added "screen=1280x800", how can I make this the default resolution for the installed kanotix?
6) How can I reinstall grub from the live cd, when I mess it by reinstalling windows?

For general instructions on how to install Kanotix look here: http://kanotix.com/FAQ-id_cat-63.html#q270
As to your specific questions: Don't try to install from the live cd. As we have seen, this doesn't work. Instead boot off the iso file in the same way you just did. This will work just as well, and the installation will even be faster.
In general, Kanotix will preserve the screen resolution used during the installation. If not, you can tweak it later with Kano's screen resolution tool.
It's very simple to re-write grub to MBR after a windows installation. Boot off cd with fromiso cheat code and launch Kanotix installer. Select "Restore existing Kanotix installation" and reboot.
