Hi all,

Got a nice new LCD monitor able to do 1400x1050 - but can't get either the LiveCD to play nicely or to strongarm XF86Config-4 to work either.

LiveCD detects settings inc. the 1400x modes, and fires up at 1024. cheatcodes make no difference, it always goes to 1024 e.g. even when using vga=794 (this with Kanotix 200504).

Have got a poor-mans install with config settings saved. So I went in and edited the configs.tbz (the XF86Config-4 under /etc saved there) to have the display modes as the LiveCD finds them- PLUS get the display to use the 1400x1050 modes...

on X11 reboot there is a lot of screen flashing as if modes are attempted then the system dumps it's settings and defaults to a safety mode - in 1024x768.

So.

Either:
1) the LiveCD detected invalid settings which I've cut & pasted into the configed file, or
2) the vesa driver can't cope with 1400x1050, or
3) the unknown problem.

Traurig help!

XP of course detected everything correctly; Win98 has issues. It'll only do 1280.

Typing this in 98, will paste a copy of the mutilated XF86Config-4 in a moment.

Did you try the change res utility from the Kanotix menu? What about increasing DefaultColorDepth to 24 (restart X by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Backspace)?

Using VDR R6 and - with the edited Config file posted - It's in 1400x1050 and everything is small now. .

Yep it is nv ... vesa is the emergency mode. Well spotted! My confusion in flipping about so.
