On dual AMD64 box with nVIDIA NV41GL video card. Is there a way to boot into multiuser text-mode only as X-windows obviously does
not work.

When grub's boot menu comes up, append cheat code "init 3" to the line of boot commands. This will take you to runlevel 3, already logged in as root.
