I was just trying to dist-upgrade and I got a message that read "unable to parse package file
/etc/apt/preferences (1)" . Could someone advise me on what to do now? I don't know much,
but I know a lot more than I did just by lurking about this forum! So I just want to thank you
folks that know your stuff and take the time and effort to participate in these forums.

be sure to do the dist-upgrade in init 3
i would advice you to use the following script, because it does all the fixes:

even easier would be an update-install with RC2
