General Support - KDE died after last nites d-u LRC - 21.09.2006, 15:55 Uhr Titel: KDE died after last nites d-u
I did a d-u last nite. Everything looked fine, but after I went to bed KDE stopped (I am presuming when screen saver tried to start). Everything else was working though. I rebooted, and when it started kdm it showed login (which I could do, but the way I set things up always means trouble), but that is as far as it went, no KDE. Am using KDE 3.5.4 kernel 2.17.13-shl-up-1 (I believe that is it, not at my box).

hm, similar case in irc this morning.
after renaming .kde and restarting X, which creates a default .kde, things where ok, other then that he had to set up things in kde from scratch.
if that dont work, you can put the old .kde back in place, so nothing to loose really.
if you try, please report back.

I am a noobie and have no clue as to how to go about it. I would pre fer the second route as it does sound safest and easiest for me.

I'd rather assume you've forgotten to reinstall your nVidia or fgrlx drivers (or didn't update the scripts first).

I had a slightly different problem with the mga Matrox driver and openGL (screensaver, googleearth etc.) not working. While trying to understand the problem, screensaver set-up in KDE control centre crashed my system - I rebooted and had to reset all my font and kde appearance settings. I've disabled screensaver for the time being.

Had nothing to do with kernel upgrade, although that is an idea to run that again, I was just running a d-u that I have done nitely, scince I started using Linux. The d-u I run are just via a console while doing other things in KDE.

Major X updates require reinstalling those proprietary drivers as well (especially when mesa is involved).

Hm no problems here, the only packages that aren't updated are:
The following packages have been kept back:
dpkg-dev idle python python-minimal rdiff-backup streamtuner
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 6 not upgraded.

This is not a good idea. You gotta make sure you shut down X before doing any major upgrades. "init 3" will do the job ("init 5" after you're done)

This is how one learns. Fall down a few times, and you learn to avoid it after awhile. Will check to see if I can get it straight after I get home to my box.

Ran d-u again. I tell you being able to do almost anything even without GUI maks me almost gag now everytime I have a prob with M$. I ran du-fixes-h2.sh, and ran video driver section and now everything is running smoothly again. By the way lordpatman, if you have a prob with almost anything with kanotix, download and run du-fixes-h2.sh (find info and download at http://techpatterns.com/forums/about736.html) go through each section making careful note of what is suggested and cautioned. Especially run the video driver section (note hit the continue button after finishing everything you need in that section). Considering how good the script is, I bet your probs disappear. It is Very good. Thanx again for everyone's imput. I am still new enough that trying the obvious is still not automatic, and I always am forgetting what little I do know.
