You guys probably know about it already.

But, I just booted into the new 2006-01-RC4 and the text in Konsole is not readable using the default theme/colors.

The text shows up as white on white and you have to highlight it to see what you typed.

The prompt text is also very difficult to see highlighting it.

But, the "white on white" typed text is totally unreadable without highlighting it (I had to do that to see what I was doing to get my network card up from the live cd).

My bad guys. It's working fine now.

I don't know what happened the first time I booted into it. But, all I saw in Konsole was white on white text unless I highligted it (and nothing was loaded except for Konsole, as the first thing I wanted to do was get my wireless card up and loaded Konsole before selecting anything else from the menus).

I just booted into the CD again, and it's working fine now (I can see the text in Konsole just fine). So, something must not have loaded or initilized right the first time around (or I've got a borderline burn that it didn't read properly).

Same here. Live-CD on a machine w/ a Radeon XPRESS 200 integrated card. Tried "compiz" as grub cheat during the first boot, but keyboard didn't work and Konsole was white-on-white. Subsequent boot w/out compiz as cheat worked fine, and installation works OK.

Live-CD and installation worked fine on laptop w/ Radeon Mobility 9700 card, too.

LiveCD boot with compiz 2 and nVidia 6600GT worked fine, nice effects. But after hd install from compiz mode, I seem to not have a window manager in KDE, can't move/resize any windows, no frames. IceWM is fine. My konsole was fine on LiveCD but can't even type in it on hd install. How to get a wm back?

Choosing 1400x1050 resolution using F3 didn't seem to do anything, still ended up @ 1024x768.

Titel: KDE hang on logout, startup
I reinstalled RC4 from normal wm (not compiz mode). First time starting up KDE was fine, but when I went to logout it hung and wouldn't get to the normal kdm login. Doing Ctrl-Alt-Backspace gets to the login again, but then KDE hangs starting up at "loading the desktop". So I couldn't get back into KDE. On my first RC4 install from compiz mode KDE worked but I had no wm, as I posted above.

P.S. I'm happily running 2006-01-RC3 on another partition, 4 Debian-based distros running well on this PC. I made the RC4 CD iso with xdelta and it checks out OK with md5sum. Burn on a CD-RW seems good, same burn method used for RC3. Yet RC4 runs fine on other people's machines.

Titel: things changing ...
Follow-up: on another cold boot of RC4, it took me to a text console login and I had to do Alt-F7 to get to kdm, no big deal. KDE startup/logout problem seems gone. On yet another reboot I had no usb mouse (both usbhid and usblp weren't loaded) but on subsequent reboots it was back. Now, everything is working nicely (Kanotix seems self-repairing ...). Titel: kdesktop is calculating the space for the wrong partition
I installed 2006-01-RC4 on sda4, a 3.5GB partition, formatting as Reiserfs using the install menu choice built into the live CD.

But, when you calculate size for it by "right clicking" on 3.5GB Media drive icon created by Kanotix on the Desktop, select properties and calculate the space, it calculates it for my 105GB NTFS partition (sda1) instead.

If you hold your mouse cursor over the icon on the desktop, the correct drive info is shown (as is the info in the meta tab looking at properties with kdesktop).

I've also got a 8.5GB reiserfs parition at sda2, and a 2GB linux swap partition at sda3. I've got a card reader on it but no cards are in it right now. I probably had a 1GB card CompactFlash Card in the reader when Kanotix was installed. I've got a couple of USB drives, too. But, none were plugged in when Kanotix was installed.

Interestingly, some of the tabs show the correct drive info (meta tab).

See this album of screen shots here. It's calculating the size for sda1 instead of sda4.

Select Original as the viewing size from the size choices you'll see under a photo when viewing it.

Titel: Suspend2 to disk
Hi,

I'm trying got get kpowersave and suspend2 to work. It seems like the hibernate process begins, but it finishes way too quickly. When I boot up, the OS boots up normally instead of restoring from disk.

I've modified the grub menu list entry kernel option with resume2=swap:/dev/hda2, but restore still doesn't work.

Mepis is the only distro that I can get hiberation working on. SUSE is supposed to have good support for it too.

Thanks

add your username to powerdev in kuser

A couple of days ago I upgraded my motherboard and
installed a dual core AMD processor. After installing
KANOTIX-2006-01-RC4 I noticed that every 4-5 secs
there is a brief burst of hard drive activity.

Running top shows the activity to be initiated by kded.
Does anyone know if this is normal activity or is it a
kde or RC4 bug?

I suspect the latter because before I installed RC4 I took
the opportunity to try Kubuntu and found no such HD activity.

Edit: Once again my age is showing. A process of elimination
reveals that this disk activity is merely Knemo doing it's thing.

Titel: installer feature-install w/out format & not reiser ->
Error Mounting /dev/sda1

The rc4 2006 installer has a feature- if one choses to 'install' but not format the / partition, and that partition is not reiserfs, it'll bomb. One has to enable to format, set the right partition type, then disable the format. It bombs with an erroneous error message, that it cannot mount the partition, while in fact it can (ie: from a su console) , but it has silently asserted the wrong filesystem type.

While technically that is an appropriate error message because the command it uses to mount the partition (which includes the partition type) fails, it sheds little light on the fix.

In both RC3 and RC4, boot-up messages always show this error (though I haven't noticed any consequences):

after "setting kernel variables" and before "activating swap file".

Don't know if this is a bug but I just bought a Dell 640m laptop with Core 2 Duo T7200 etc. RC4 does not set the screen resolution correctly. I add screen=1280x900 (native res) on the boot line but it boots with 1024x768. After googling around I discovered the 915resolution utility and by making sure that runs before X starts I can get the correct resolution. Given that 915resolution was already installed on the RC4 disk, I am guessing that Kanotix was intending to install this automatically?

I also put the latest kanotix SMP kernel on (2.6.18.1-kanotix-1) but found that it did not include the appropriate driver for my wireless card (ipw3945). After googling, I discovered I had to download the source and compile it myself which worked although I can't seem to get it hotplugging properly. Although I don't have any external bluetooth devices to test it, KDE seems to report the laptops bluetooth interface hotplugging on and off just fine.

BTW, I started "Control Center" and I noticed that vesa driver is used - probably
because I entered
Code:
xmodule=vesa

at install.

So I clicked on button [redetect] and restarted virtual machine. Unfortunately Kanotix did
not start (just blank very wide screen). After rebooting with option '2' I was able to open
xorg.conf (/etc/X11) and noticed that instead of vesa driver s3 is used, which did not
work in the current release candidate . So I have two questions:
1. Is it possible to edit xorg.conf so that s3 driver would work
2. Is it possible to use vesa driver with resolutions greater than 1024×768

As a temporary solution I edited xorg.conf and changed driver back to the 'vesa' driver,
so I am able to start Kanotix again Smilie

Here is an interesting information:
http://www.betanews.com/article/Virtual ... 1160688475
Zitat:

As for Linux support, the only real problem that Microsoft has is that they never finished implementing their S3 Trio 64 emulation. The 24-bit color mode is missing. In theory, Linux drivers and "probing" (HW detection) code would retrieve the supported modes from VESA BIOS before attempting to switch to them. However, most Linux S3 Trio 64 drivers were written based on the fact that ALL true S3 Trio 64 hardware does implement 24-bit color. This is why the #1 most common problem for Linux on Virtual PC and Virtual Server is messed-up video. There are also a few issues with Microsoft's Linux version of VMAdditions. They were actually written for Microsoft by a German company which wrote the OS/2 Additions for Connectix years ago. These issues, however, are typical Linux distro compatibility issues (things like RPM installations on Debian) and they are not terribly different than the challenges people face with VMware's VMTools on various Linux distros.

kanotix uses a freeze feature to prevent services to be started after upgrades without the user taking notice. so, what you do is:

Hi I don't know if this has been reported before, however Splashy does not work correctly. I installed RC4 and then did an apt-get dist-upgrade - after which Splashy will work for 3/4 of the booting process - and then the process will halt (it seems as though perhaps splashy is waiting for an event?) pretty much indefinitely - and it will only continue when I press escape, then alt and F1 to drop to a terminal. After I do this the booting process will continue normally.

It seems a shame to have something as trivial as a progress bar interfere, or halt the booting process in this way.

Splashy is not working well for me.

I did a dist-upgrade last night and randomly could reboot.
Today I reinstalled 2006-01rc4 and proved to myself that, for me, there is a serious problem with the new Splashy (besides the plain penguin).

Reinstalled again and then removed Splashy before rebooting.
All is working well. At least it doesn't hang and not allow exiting Splashy.

With this new install, running only apt-get and mainly upgrade.
Installed the 2.6.18.3-slh-up-1 kernel with h2's script and then upgraded in a console.

Did an upgrade, just to get up to date, but it caused the problem with the Splashy. Maybe I'll just do upgrades for a while. I don't *have* to have the very latest. Don't have any new hardware.

And now there seems to be only 1 stable kernel.
h2's script was still reporting 2.6.18.3-slh-up-1.
I'll just keep watching. Probably didn't need the new kernel either. Smilie

Hello!

With the latest updates:
Code:
xserver-xorg-core/unstable uptodate 2:1.1.1-11
xserver-xorg-video-s3/unstable uptodate 1:0.4.1-5

it seems that S3 video driver is working OK again
inside Virtual PC! Sehr glücklich

Hi OK this seems to be quite a big bug for me. I often cannot start my computer reliably with Grub:

Sorry one more to add to the list. It does not appear that it is possible to enable DMA on DVD drives on recent laptops computers with no IDE interface. (i.e computers with SATA interfaces only - as is currently and will be the case with all future Intel chipsets. (Or in other words, they have already effectively abandoned the IDE interface).

So users with such computers are currently restricted to PIO only mode for their drives.

I don't know if this is a Kernel bug, or if it is a Debian bug - so I am uncertain who best to report the issue to.
