When I try to do apt-get update I get these errors with every debain source

I've tried ftp.de.debian.org, ftp.debian.org and ftp.uk.debian.org but if I type those addresses in firefox it goes to the site instantly.
The kanotix sources update ok.

None for me. However, while looking for some info about my router settings (the router is the only change since my last kanotix install) I found that my particular router blocks outbound ftp by default but doesn't actually document this, log it or show it in any settings.
I've just tried apt4suse and that wasn't updating either but after adding an ftp rule to the router it is now so I'm assuming it will also now work with kanotix, I'll be trying it soon.

Hmm. It didn't work on kanotix.
However, John's suggestion did work after all. When I tried it I did ftp2.debian instead of ftp2.de.debian.

I was wrong again, it worked once then wouldn't after that, same problem.
Turned out my nameservers weren't being updated and after changing them it appears to be updating but hangs at the end

I've left it for up to half an hour but nothing else happens, not even a "failed to fetch" error.
Any ideas what to try now?

Incidentally, on the subject of apt-get, is there anyway to set the timeout shorter when it's trying to connect?

More trouble with this. After rebooting /etc/resolv.conf is reset and the nameserver is my router ip address, as it is with other distros. For some reason I can't get anywhere at all with apt-get with that nameserver, I have to change it to my isp's dns but it resets every boot.

Still not getting anywhere with this. Basically, the only way I can apt-get anything is by changing resolv.conf to my isp's dns servers instead of the router but as I've said they are reset every boot and I don't want to have to mess about changing resolv.conf every time I want to install anything.
Does anyone know why this is only occuring with apt-get when I can browse fine and read emails etc with no problems?
Failing that, is there anything I can do to stop resolv.conf being updated?

you have to make friends with that router.
kanotix is not the problem. i use my isp' dns for years without probs or the router resetting it.
you router probably has a setting where it reclaims its own ip as dns.

Yes, you can configure dhclient to set the nameservers you prefer by using the prepend statement. For details see

Well I never said kanotix was the problem. The fact I had no apt-get problems with my old usb modem pointed me to the router being a problem but I just don't understand why all other internet related apps are fine with the router settings but not apt.

But everything is working ok now, many thanks to ockham23 for pointing me to dhclient.conf. I just needed to uncomment the "prepend domain-name-servers" line and add my isp's dns servers and now when networking is started, those nameservers are inserted into resolv.conf before the router nameserver and apt is now working ok.
