General Support - How to follow FAQ and Forum advice if not connected? ((fm)) - 25.10.2006, 01:52 Uhr Titel: How to follow FAQ and Forum advice if not connected?
My goal is to set-up Kanotix on two laptops for latest Blender 3D, Cinnerella, and VLC Player softwares. Graphic Acceleration is my primary concern. Here is a description of these laptops:
Old Dell Inspiron 7000 x86
PII 400 MHz 126 MB RAM
ATI Rage P/M Mobility AGP 2x 8 MB RAM video card
ESS Maestro2 Ess Technology sound card
New Toshiba Satellite A100
Centrino Duo 2.0 GHz 1024 MB RAM
Nvidia GeForce Go 7600 PCI Express 256 MB RAM video card
Realtek HD Audio sound card
I've been browsing the forum for a while now trying to make Kanotix work for me. My immediate problem is that I do not have access to a internet connection, so I get all my downloads from internet cafes around my place and then try it on my computers. The latest 2006-01-RC4 was the most successful release thus far for me, but without a connection I can't use update-scripts-kanotix.sh, apt-get update, wget or anything of the sort. Is there another way? Here are things I have noticed and tried thus far concerning the Inspiron 7000:
When on HD install, I find, in the administrator mode of knxcc display drivers tab, no access to my nvidia or ati options. Driver is recognised as ati, but only VESA and FBdev is available for changes.
If I try directly the already present install-fglrx-debian.sh in /usr/local/bin in init 3, I get the message: Error: No ATI RAEON/FIREGL adapter found. I know Kanotix detected the hardware properly, but it seems unable to install the appropriate drivers for it.
I'm also having difficulty with mounting the dvd-rom on hd install. I just end up doing it in crusader as root, and even then it takes some time to make it work.
Please redirect me if I have missed relevant topics of my inquiry in the English forum.
thanks for your support, kindly,

fm,
from my point of view, linux without internet is a bit useless.
update-scripts-kanotix.sh, apt-get update, wget wont work without.
to install stuff, you can get the .deb packages from somewhere else and install them with:
dpkg -i <whatever.deb>
but since debian has new packages every day, thats only half the fun.
