I thought that koffice supports the same formats as lo now? Cant you just save it in that format?
I don't understand what you are getting at.
Open your kword file and save it as ODT.
If you want to modify the text in the *.odt file, double-click on it.

Your *.kwd file isn't a KWord file, it's a tarball.
Something went wrong while tarring and 'fnt.kwd' must have got overwritten, and then included in the correct tarring. Good work!
