Any ideas when we will see the first 2006 version. I know that has been discussed in the past, but the thread has gone cold. I was just interested and wanted toget a feel where Kano is headed with this fantastic distro.
Thanks |

Kano has said on IRC that there is not a new kernel yet that meets his satisfaction and that he is not satisfied with kde 3.5. When he is happy with the new release that's when we will get a new release. I think we should have a contest... where you pick the date and hour of the release. I go with May 1, 2006, noon UT.
Maybe we need a prize for the winner? Maybe a date with cBlue (inside joke for old Mepis folks). Second prize could be a weekend with cBlue

out of curiosity, what did Kano say about the kernel and KDE3.5?
I'm running slh's kernel and KDE3.5 w/ no problems I've seen so far yet... |

KDE3.5 isn't rock stable, there are some annoyances:
kmail (with imap) opens every time you start kde (also _without_ new mails)
mini-buttons from system tray glitch over to the top left corner of screen
konquerer browser freezes/crashes
artsd consumes 100% CPU
TBC
Ciao Martin
P.S.: The "old" KDE3.5 from alioth seems much more stable than 3.5.1 from SID |

The mini-button system tray glitch is odd, isn't it? I thought it was a problem with knemo, not kde.

I think I've seen something similar...bring up Firefox and a shell window and try using both and eventually, a popup menu keeps coming up in the lower right hand corner. I thought it was just a quirk to force you to use Konquerer |

It happened to me for the first time today; the GB keyboard flag ended up in the right top corner - it appears there when I shutdown but never before in normal view mode - I just quit the 'icon' (and it has found its way back to the system tray).

hmmm... for me what happens is that US keyboard flag appears (sometimes) in the top left corner - must have something to do with which side of the road you drive on... |

ditto. Also ditto with the konqueror's issue. Akregrator crashes very often, too. |

op4latino,
Have you dist-upgraded lately? The new kde seems to have all the issues fixed.

Well, It's May 1st and akregator crashes everytime I start KDE since it was upgraded for the last time. I think konqueror is fixed. |

Yes it is already June and kde has released 3.5.3 last May 31st.
I am really looking forward to this year's release. It has been a while and most other distributions have already come out with their 2006 versions.
I really love Kanotix and I hope it would be soon that we get to see the 2006 version. |

jam,
are you really comparing developement of kde and kanotix?
i dont know, how many people are developing kde, but they are quite a bunch, and some even get paid for it. kanotix 2006-01 will be released, when kde and sid are stable enough for a snapshot.
why not use easter-preview RC4?

Use my kanotix dist-upgrade script and your 2005 will be a 2006, as drb said. Newest kernel, fully dist-upgraded. As long as it's 2005-4 based that is.
But be warned, you're much better off starting with easter rc4 than doing a massive dist-upgrade on 2005-4. And if it's earlier than 2005-4, the odds of it working are not high.
Anyone doing dist-upgrades on any of the 2005-4 and later releases has the newest version, the 2006 version, minus a few scripts etc. |

Thank you,
I might just do that, or I might just clean install the rc4,
or something else. My 2005 Kanotix install its quite slow
lately, broken. I was planning to wait as long as I could
for the new version, but I don't see it coming and it might
take months before its out. And I am getting tired of the slow
motion of computer that I have now. So I will start my
back up.. sigh.. and this week end will do the clean install,
I might give the new Mepis a try (if is out by then).
Otherwise I will go for the rc4.
Thank you again for your responses. |

linuxy, for me, the entire reason to use a true debian based system is to be able to avoid the 'wait for the next release' thing in the first place.
If you install the latest, do a dist-upgrade, then keep up with the issues of dist-upgrade etc, you will always have the 'latest release', at least for a long time, we'll see how long an install can be kept going.
Your installs shouldn't have 'bogged down' however, that suggests some other issue.
Remember, if you reinstall, reformat the drive first, to clean everything out.
Avoid installing stuff not from apt/debs.
My system is now 7 months old, full time use, fully upgraded, and it's not slowed down in any way.
To me, when I hear this, warning bells go off in my head, it suggests something else wrong, an initial bad cd burn, not done in Disk At Once, a bad hard drive, bad memory, no reformat of initial partition, some error.
All my boxes are running roughly 7 month old installs, fully upgraded, and they all run pretty much exactly the same, if not better, than when I first installed. Of course, many of the older bugs are fixed during subsequent dist-upgrades.
Using the script I linked to makes it a bit easier long term, since I try to include fixes as they come up.
Mepis is moving to kubuntu repositories, so if you move to mepis you are moving away from debian true, but if you aren't using debian dist-upgrade anyway it doesn't really matter what apt-based distro you use anyway.
I would check your harddrive with disk check utilities, available on ultimate boot cd, I'd check your ram, stuff like that, before reinstalling.
Things I do to keep the system solid:
1 - use a separate /home partition. this avoids filling up the / partition by accident, and avoids mixing operating system stuff with user data stuff, keeps it clean.
2 - make the / partition significantly larger than you think it needs to be, for me, that's about 12-15 gigabytes.
3 - Store bigger data on separate partitions, that's things like isos etc. This, again, avoids accidentally filling up the partition.
4 - definitely avoid doing the windows thing of using one single massive partition for the os, programs, and data.
5 - routine backups, followed by routine dist-upgrades, to avoid the massive dist-upgrades. However, my script will, as last tested, still bring any kanotix since 2005-4 upto latest with relatively few glitches, except for the stuff that still isnt' fully resolved in sid [cups and python currently]. Those are relatively trivial though.
6 - don't fill it with extra junk, like gnome for example. Install stuff you need, and if you don't need something you installed, remove it with the --purge option |

h2,
you are right. My computer was a few years old and that was the
main reason, I think, of the trouble. I just went and got me a new one,
dual core AMD 64 with tons of ram/hd. I will try to keep upto-date.
The only thing is that when I dist-upgrade sometimes I run into
trouble.. and I can be quite busy at times to try to figure it out.. so
lately I haven't dist-upgrade because of that. I will try to change
that and dis-upgrade often.
Thank you for all the suggestions.

When ever I reinstall Kanotix using 2005.4 rc17 I first do an upgrade then update with the latest kernel, do another upgrade then I dist-upgrade. |
