I noticed a problem dist-upgradeing.

Need to get 0B of archives. After unpacking 1893kB will be freed.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n/?] y
Writing extended state information... Error!
E: I wasn't able to locate file for the linux-image-2.6.17.11-kanotix-2 package. This might mean you need to manually fix this package.
E: Couldn't lock list directory..are you root?
Iron@Bumbie:~$

I just removed the lines pertaining to linux-image-2.6.17.11-kanotix-2 in var/lib/dpkg/status file but I am sure that isnt proper fixing.
It let me continue with my dist upgrade though.
On kpakage, linux-image-2.6.17.11-kanotix-2 shows a question mark next to it under the column installed.
Does this need to be reinstalled?
Is it because of dependancey issues?
Should I uninstall manually with aptitude then reinstall?
Or would I need to re-install as if doing a kernel upgrade.?

I am curious if this is kanotix-gui issue when upgradeing the kernel or something else.
I tried H2's script but it would not continue on.I have not tried h2's script since I edited the /var/lib/dpkg/status file.

By the way,the new fglrx.sh file and the new kernel auto finds, mounts, and fixes any md raid partitions I had on its own.The last 3 radeon driver upgrades worked but direct rendering was no.Now it is on by default with the fglrx script.Raid works fine with this new kernel as well.

Thank you folks....if you are confused as to what I am asking please dont ignore and ask me to re-explain clearer.

Thank you in advance

That's correct. Please follow the advice given and get a root console. To fix the problems you have now, also use a root console and do:
Code:
apt-get update && apt-get -f install

You may add/remove applications without problems afterwards.

schnorrer hat folgendes geschrieben::

That's pure crap. You may install new kernels from any runlevel you are in.

Greetings,
Chris

Try h2 du-fixed script (must be in init 3), Sure got me out of a jam. It loks asthough you are trying to do a kernel upgrade. I would never do it using dist-upgrade. Run either h2 script or kanotix update gui and run the kernel upgrade and that will automatically get you the linux- image you are asking for. Now mined you I am a noobie and have no clue as to how to compile kernel, but my theory is, why go through all that hard work when you have these 2 excelent options that will do all the work for you. They compile the whole hkernel and set up your sound and graphics in minutes with only a few key strokes.

I didnt install the new kernel logged in as Iron,it was root. When you click kanotix-update-gui it asks for root password before opening.
The above dist upgrade message was done in root useing sudo

My question is,should I re-install the kernel or is there a way to just install that part of the kernel....."linux-image-2.6.17.11-kanotix-2"?
I have the "?" next to it under installed colomn.I am guessing I have to reinstall the kernel, just verifying is all.

Ok cool...but I notice it only has an option for slh's kernels or am I missing something.I'd like to keep kanotix kernel if thats cool.No specific reasons.

Thank you piper.

Also find it odd nothing seems wrong with that image needing re-install.

The kano 'kanotix' labeled kernels are located in the advanced kernel install options of the du-fixes script

@ironwalker: Hey, finally I recognized who you are, or who you have been before! Do you really think a black penguin with a ***** is better than a black man with a gun? Why do more and more people use those childish penguins for their avatars? Winken

Have a look at http://archive.kanotix.com, we have preserved all the older stuff there.

Greetings,
Chris

H2,
I noticed when useing your script vs the kanotix-update-gui for kernel upgrades that when after rebooting my sata raid is fully found, mounted, and logged but kanotix-update-gui just recognises it but cant mount it do to there being no record of raid.
Odd,yes, but I am assumeing it has something to do with the module install/remove option that kanotix-update-gui offers as one of the steps to the upgrade.Problem is I do not recognise any of the modules and found myself unticking all..
How does your script handle these?
Does it just install all of them?
If so,then this is why your script mounts the raid at boot, which is good actually, but does anyone know which module it is for a promise sata raid card?Or which module reacts to my mdadm setup sata raid?

Thanks, hope that made sense,if not I will elaborate a bit more.

Keep up the great work on the script by the way.A bit long but works flawlessly.

Since I dont' know what the update-gui actually does internally, I can only speculate that it does something in the process, whereas I know that my script does nothing extra beyond what apt does itself.

Same for the kernel install, the script itself does almost nothing extra beyond what the slh kernel install script it runs does. So somewhere in that 'something' that the update gui does the raid is not activated is my guess, whereas the default behavior with du is to activate it. That's just a guess though.

If you run the script with -h option, you will see a help menu that shows things you can switch off when you run the script, like this: du-fixes-h2.sh -h
You can run the help menu without being in init 3 by the way.

Some of the steps, however, are set to only run one time, so you will only see them the first run through of the script.
