Well, my work pc was 2005-02 or some such ... and I hadn't wanted to dist-upgrade it since it's install, as it was my work pc (at work) and I didn't feel that I could spend the time playing with d-u's ... it'd been working all this time just fine.
So I finally decided to d-u but since it was definately older than 2005-04 I couldn't use h2's script to d-u it, and I proceded to bork my system manually ... I got deeper and deeper into hal/udev hell. Kept losing my ethernet ... and then my mouse ... it got worse and worse.
But then I remembered that I can install upgrade from the 2006 easter-rc4 and it worked sooo well!
I wanted to keep the users that were set up, and their passwords, and their home accounts. So I told the install upgrade to keep only /home, /usr/local/, /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow, /etc/group, /etc/hostname, /etc/apt/sources.list and a few others that it had automatically suggested ... I removed the other directory lines that it suggested so that it would install a new /root and everything ... and so it installed a nice new system but also kept my settings and passwords ... I knew it would, but I just can't help feeling that it's soooo good ... and fast! |
