herring, it happens every few months. Hard to say how long to wait, cdroms are not being read correctly if it's a data cd still, so the fixes have to come down the pipe, no guarantees. And if you have weird enough toys, you might be the first person to find a new issue. So you can't say for sure.
to mount data cdroms, you have to do this currently:
pmount /dev/hdc [assuming your cdrom is actually /dev/hdc
pumount /dev/hdc [to unmount]
run this command to see what your system is using as link:
ls -l /dev/cdrom
your output will look like this:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 Jul 31 11:07 /dev/cdrom -> hdc
music cdroms work fine without this though |

Did a du today using the du-fixes-h2.sh script. Read this thread very carefully and h2 instructions more than once before I began. wrote down info to follow. Really easy to follow and everything explained. Loaded kde up real nice for me. Did the bit with kcontrol on the fonts. Even got my ati X1600 pro card installed. The only problem that I am having is the KDE keyboard tool is showing an error:
"error changing keyboard layout to 'us' ".
I get err instead of a flag. Everything works okay though.
This was my first du and have only had kanotix for about a week. Can't believe how smooth it went. Thanks h2.

Got CD-ROM/DVD mounting via icon now as well. You have to comment the line starting with /dev/cdrom in /etc/fstab like that:
Zitat:
# /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0

hal-kanotix upgrade fixed the problem; no comments against CDRom fstab entries but had to comment out sda1 to get USB stick to work.

Just so I understand, I checked what groups I belonged to:
root@WorldsEnd:/home/joyboy# /usr/bin/groups joyboy
joyboy : joyboy dialout fax voice cdrom floppy tape sudo audio dip video games users usb scanner camera plugdev fuse
I noticed the debian fix shows
<policy group="powerdev">
<allow
which is in my hal.conf file as well, and hubi's fix shows
<policy group="plugdev">
<!--
And I was wondering what the difference means & subsequently which one would be best for me to use? Also when or if an upgrade fix becomes avaliable for this HAL problem, will it be necessary to edit hal.conf once again?
BTW, I see that the -w switch is necessary in order to force pmount to mount r/w
Thanks. |

I did a d-u - it includes a hal-kanotix upgrade. This rewrites hal.conf during the set up to include both groups.

Last hal-kanotix upgrade don't work for me. Now, when I try to mount a data cd-dvd, Konqueror sends me a error message: "Permissions denied".

fantassio: Add yourself to the plugdev group. (System/Kuser/Select Yourself/Edit/Groups/....)
That does the trick.
Greetings,

fantasio, you have to comment out the cdrom line in /etc/fstab
/dev/cdrom /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 users,noauto 0 0
place a # in front of it, save, then reboot, and your cdrom should read data cds again |

Thanks,Slam, my user was in plugdev group. Comment out the cdrom line in fstab works. Now, I can mount cds in Konqueror.
Thanks a lot!

the du-fixes-h2 script now has the option to run a fix for the cd/dvd rom mounting issue.
It will look for cdrom and dvd entries in /etc/fstab and comment them out if it finds them. It will let you know if it finds them. If you have two dvd roms or two cdroms it won't work, although it will probably get at least one of them. |

h2,
I really should go on a looooong offline holiday just to use your scripts to bring my Kanotix boxes back on track when I come back.
You are doing a fantastic job,

h2,
I share hubi's feelings. There are many fine people who post here and contribute and you are certainly one of them. Thank you.

Thanks h2, the update plus commenting out my cd/dvd drives in fstab did the trick. I can now mount my data cd/dvd's properly with no error. Hopefully there will be a longterm fix coming for this glitch |
