I had to reinstall Kanotix Friday.....harddisk died.....completely.
Everything went great...as usual.
Except for one thing. Thunderbird works fine until I close it...then when I reopen my account is gone...I have to create a "new" account again and again. I can't figure out why my account doesn't "stick"...it did before. I used the tar file from the Thunderbird website to instal. Do I need to reinstall from the Debian repository? |

It is never a good idea to install programs from source on a Debian system. The Debian repo now has the most updated Thunderbird. |

I went to the Thunderbird site....Wow what a novel approach.....
They had a procedure listed for getting the profile back....
Tried it.... worked great.
I have used many tar files over the past year, on Kanotix little or no trouble save the fact that I wound up hating most of them. Even used Synaptic to remove them....little trouble.
That is one of the things that makes Linux so compelling for me...the ability to try new things.... The system doesn't bork as easily as Windoze did. Further, I can create "my" system and am not stuck with theirs.
Thanks for the reply. I do realize that applications that aren't in the repository pose some peril....I enjoy a bit of danger now and then |

I'm glad you got it working. In my experience, installing non-Debian apps have always meant borking my system. I see your point about creating "your own" system. |

the thunderbird and firefox tar files are pretty much standalone, I'd been using the firefox tar/gzipped version for 4-6 months with no problems due to some firefox issues, but I finally gave up and switched to the deb version. Thunderbird however, which I also tried running the tarred version of due to some annoying glitches that aren't going away, for some reason didn't see its data directory so I reinstalled the deb version and decided to just live with the bugs. |

Have you looked for your account in /home/.mozilla-thunderbird etc etc? If it is there and you point to it in account settings, it should load each time.

drb, no, I just gave up and stuck with the deb thunderbird, though I'm starting to get tired of its inbox unopened email count bug
but it's just trivial enough functionally to make it not worth spending any real time on for me. |
