Hi,
ich versuche gerade den HP NX6110 Laptop meiner Schwester mit einem WRT54GL Router zu verbinden. Der HP ist kein Centrino, er hat eine Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN Karte. Dazu musste ich erst einmal den Kernel upgraden, um Zugriff auf das bcm43xx Modul zu bekommen, dass im Kernel des Kanotix Easter Packs wohl noch nicht unterstützt wurde. So weit so gut, das hat alles gut funktioniert. ifup wlan0 lässt nun auch die blaue LED leuchten und die Karte ist zugreifbar.
Ich kann nun vom Laptop aus nach verfügbaren Netzwerken scannen, mir wird der Router und einige andere Netzwerke in der Nachbarschaft gelistet. Das scheint also geklappt zu haben.
Nun versuche ich eine Verbindung mit dem Router herzustellen. Dazu habe ich netcardconfig benutzt und WPA/TKIP konfiguriert. Ich habe mich nicht beim Passwort verschrieben, das habe ich mehrmals gemacht.
Ich bekomme nun aber die Fehlermeldung
SoftMAC: Authentication timed out with <WRT54 MAC>
Ich habe mal danach gegoogled und einen Eintrag gefunden, der schrieb, dass man von 54M auf 11M herunter schalten soll, dann sollte das funktionieren (der fragende User bestätigte das auch, ich konnte es noch nicht probieren). Allerdings kann die Karte ja eigentlich 54M, es ist ja eine G Karte. Ist das ein Problem mit dem Modul, dass diese Geschwindikeit nicht unterstützt, oder was kann das sein?
Oder liegt es bei mir evtl. ganz wo anders? Vielleicht unterstützt das Modul ja kein WPA/TKIP? Habt ihr irgendwelche Hinweise für mich, wie ich das HP mit dem WRT54 konnektiert bekomme? Benötige dringend Hilfe, ich habe bereits Stunden davor gesessen.. :-/ Etwas frustrierend, wenn man sieht, wie unglaublich einfach das mit meinem Centrino ging.. |

Can you connect from Windows using WPA?
Did you try loading windows driver with ndiswrapper? |

For flawless usage of WPA it usually is better to use newest ndiswrapper with the Win-drivers.

Yes, I am able to connect using Windows. And no, I didn't try to connect using the ndiswrapper. I liked to get the native linux support up and running. And I don't know, how to get the drivers of my notebook running in ndiswrapper.. I got so far using the native support, that I am not very happy with going all the way again using ndiswrapper... Should I?
P.S.: Oh well.. It seems, that I should give the ndiswrapper a try.. Oh man, all these hours for nothing and all again, using another way? Well.. If it promise me to reach my ame, I would do this of course.. |

It seems to be the case, that the bcm43xx module doesn't support speeds at >11M. I found this one (written 31.07.2006):
Q: Is the driver still not capable of using 54 mbit/s?
A: No, it's still not capable of transmitting reliably at > 11M (and it's a little shakey on some cards at that speed too  ). We're doing the best we can. :p It's 800k of binary driver we're working with. 
So it seems I have to switch to ndiswrapper.. Thanks for the input! Any easy tutorial hint on this point? |

1. Copy windows driver files to hard drive partition or usb flash drive. Be sure to include file(s) with ".inf" extension.
2. Boot computer off Kanotix cd. This is for testing in a standardized environment. Run "configure ndiswrapper" from the Kanotix menue, then try setting up the card with netcardconfig.

3. If this procedure works, apply it to your hd installation.
4. Make sure you installed ndiswrapper*.deb package that came with the new kernel. |

To use ndiswrapper you need to blacklist bcm43xx -- blacklist is probably in
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
add
blacklist bcm43xx
========================================
To use bcm43xx
apt-get install bcm43xx-fwcutter
fwcutter will get the needed firmware from your Windows drivers
you may also need to add
blacklist ndiswrapper
to blacklist file

@mdmarmer: Do you know, if bcm43xx will work? And where fwcutter will get the needed firmware from?
If I remember correctly I was unable to find the correct driver.inf file on my CDs that came with the HP Laptop.. Will fwcutter need something from the CDs or is it able to get it anywhere from the internet? |

You do need the Windows drivers -- I had them in a folder under my home directory -- you probably need at least .inf and .sys files
bcm43xx does work -- I have not checked the speed, but it seems as fast as anything else. I think it is harder to set up than ndiswrapper -- I use it only if I have problems getting ndiswrapper to work. That may be just the experience I've had.

HP uses oem-X numbers for their software. but all .INF are stuctured and have the vendor set as Plain text.
And if you have Win installed, boot linux and check /media/HDWIN/winnt/inf/oemX for the file. |

| bcm43xx has become quite usable with current kernel 2.6.18 development snapshots. 54 MBit/s + wpa2/ ccmp is possible with it, other parts of the driver still need improvements (like not filling the syslog or getting a bit more reliable on longer distance connections). |
