During my last apt-get update, I received this error at the end:

Hit http://kanotix.com sid/non-free Sources
Hit http://kanotix.com sid/vdr Sources
Get:6 http://ftp.us.debian.org unstable/main Packages [4438kB]
51% [5 Packages bzip2 4437905] [6 Packages 11810/4438kB 0%] 154kB/s 28s
bzip2: Compressed file ends unexpectedly;
perhaps it is corrupted? *Possible* reason follows.
bzip2: Inappropriate ioctl for device
Input file = (stdin), output file = (stdout)

It is possible that the compressed file(s) have become corrupted.
You can use the -tvv option to test integrity of such files.

You can use the `bzip2recover' program to attempt to recover
data from undamaged sections of corrupted files.

Konsole froze at the last line (above) the first time I tried to update so I closed the shell. Subsequent re-running apt-get update resulted in a message saying the archive was locked, so I closed Konsole & ended the kde session, & tried again with the same response. Restarting the computer resulted in what's pasted here minus the last line which I had to type in because copying wouldn't work with it included. At this time the shell is still locked at the 99% line. Never had this sort of thing happen before trying to update my sources.list. I wonder if it has something to do with the non-free sources package group. Anyone experience anything similar?

wget -O/etc/apt/sources.list http://kanotix.com/files/fix/sources.list

I saw it last night from the "de" repos.
Changed to "us" repos and did the update/d-u.
I really doubt that was the problem.
I believe it happens when the repositories are being updated.
Usually just wait a while and try again.

I was getting those too a while ago, I believe the error is quite accurate, something went wrong on the update server, and the bzip files got corrupted somehow, or failed to get zipped correctly.

When this happened to me, which it did several times, I just did the update with no pdiffs, that's an option on my script, by the way, -p makes it run with no pdiffs. I believe what happened was that one or two pdiffs were not zipped correctly, and then caused the update to fail with that error. I used to see this all the time on the filezilla nightly zipped files, a problem so bad I actually had to add bzip integrity testing to my download and install script for the nightly.
