After upgrade to 2.6.18-rc5-slh-up-1,

Ahhhh! Success. Went back and did

modprobe snd_intel8x0 buggy_semaphore=1
and edited /etc/modprobe.d/sound to read

alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
options snd-intel8x0 index=0 buggy_semaphore=1
.
This was from a post on this forum...can't find it now...but it has this sound system working again!!! Didn't work before the kernel upgrade, so thanks again to Kano and to whoever posted that fix in the first place.
