OK. I am ready to get rid of xp, but not sure what changes I will need to make ( probably to grub?) so that I don't have to completely reinstall and go get all packages and so forth again. I have backed up all important data onto another PC, and made an image of root partition, which also contained home. Current set up:
hda1= winxp
hda2= / and /home
hda3= fat32 data storage
hda4= swap file

Desired set up:
hda1= /
hda2= /home (move all data from fat32 to here)
hda3= swap

What will I need to change/modify so that I can boot after I wipe the xp off and change the partition that / resides on? I think relocating home is as simple as editing mountpoint in fstab, right? Anything else I need to know but didn't ask? Thanks for your help to kick the windows habit Smilie

erm .. why bother moving it all?
i dont see a need to risk a well-working setup
and yoy can use the hda1 for something else till a new kanotix-version comes out

I agree, there's no reason to change anything unless you're running out of space.

If you want to repartition your hard drive anyway, restoring your Kanotix system is much easier if you use (new) hda2 for /. Otherwise you would have to edit at least /boot/grub/menu.lst and /etc/fstab. It would be sufficient to create a small primary partition hda1 and format it as linux-swap. Then create another primary partition hda2 to be used for /. Finally, create an extended partition hda3 and populate it with as many logical drives as you need (partitions hda5, hda6 ...).

Well, I had been running out of space- one more good reason to kick winxp. But, as you all pointed out, I really didn't need to move and mess with everything. I ended up reformating the windows partition into reiserfs and made it /home. Now I can use fat32 partition just for work, which eats up lots of space. Thanks for the helpful suggestions.

Yippee no more windows on laptop Smilie Now I just have to get to the desktop one of these days... not sure what wife will say.

Me too. Well sort of. A friend just switched entirely to linux from dual boot. His wife wasn't sure, but as she uses Linux more, she likes it more. Especially as Runescape and Iiable 2 run in Linux!

I would like to switch my girlfriend to Linux, but she is blind, and screen reader software for linux seems to be about where it was for Windows about 10 years ago..barely functional (if I find a way to use the 2.4.xx kernel) and needs LOTS and LOTS of work.

@UncleDeadley: I hope you're not running /home on FAT, are you?

No, /home is reiserfs. Work is fat32. It was where I was keeping all my data from work, because I was going back and forth between windows and linux, and didn't want to try writing to ntfs.

But, for my future reference, what would be wrong with running /home on a FAT32 partion?

fat doesn't know about file permissions; my flatmate once had her ~ on FAT (trying to share her firefox bookmarks b/w Win and Lin) and got in a quite decent mess. Nothing persistent, but *lots* of programs complained. After reformatting it to some linux file system everything was fine
