Titel: sound card will not work after installing nvidia driver

since adding the nvidia driver i have no sound
it was fine after changing the kernel to 2.6.17.11-kanotix-2
cat /proc/asound/cards picks up the dvb card
0 [CX8801 ]: CX88x - Conexant CX8801
Conexant CX8801 at 0xcb000000
done alsaconf
checked "Kcontrol->Sound and Multimedia -> Sound System"
change "enable sound system" i.e. on-off-on
so that i can apply when it tries i get this error
Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device: default can't be opened for playback (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

I assume i have to run alsaconf after i install kanotix-udev-config
i currently have version 0.2.23
is this right?

I have turned off the sound system in the control center
this seems to have fixed the problem i.e. kaffeine crashes only some of the time
but kmix now has a choice between the dvb card and the onboard sound card
is it possible to add an nvidia driver to the old 2.6.16 kernel?
