          | I am trying to upgrade the kernel on a compaq presario v5000 laptop (which works beatifully after some configuring), because I would like to to use the native bcm43xx wireless driver, and the updated alsa. my current kernel is 2.6.16.16-kanotix-1, installed from the 64 bit live cd. I followed the same process for the 2.6.17.11 kernel with no problems.
following the instructions according to the faq:
 http://kanotix.com/FAQ-id_cat-15.html#q109

 I see the following output:

Notice: the mouse protocol "auto" has been changed to "IMPS/2"!
If you have problems change it to "PS/2" - "auto" does not work with 2.6.
Change was done in /etc/X11/xorg.conf (and /etc/X11/xorg.conf.1st).

usbdevfs has been replaced by usbfs in /etc/fstab with devmode=0666
alsa sound will be muted next start.
use alsactl store as root to save it after checking the volumes.
Now you can simply reboot when using GRUB (default). In case you use
LILO you have to do the mentioned changes manually.
 Have fun!
