1: If I want to get the from Easter-edition to the new 2006-RC2is it enough to do dist-upgrade or shall I do a update-install with the new cd?
2: What will be the difference between the two?
3: And if i do a update-install with RC2 and then for going to the next coming RC3 is it ok to do only dist-upgrade? |

vilde,
RC2 is out and RC3 will maybew follow today, maybe wait for that and do an update-install with the new cd.
you cant get RC2 through dist-upgrade, but something similar, concerning the packages installed.
Depending on how old your install is and your knowledge level, it might be better to go for update-install.

Thanks Team Member, as you can see I have changed the questions according to that Rc2 is out.
But am I right that if I do update-install I will loose programs wich are not in the release, programs wich I installed myself after main installation? |

I do dist-upgrade with h2:s script around once every week so I'm good updated also with the kernel.
What is the difference then to do the update-insttall? Do I get new programs or new looks or what? |

vilde,
with update-install you loose apps not on the cd, but you keep their configs, as your /home is preserved.
just get the apps per apt and they will pick up the config when you start them.
h2-script is fine, yes.
you get a fresh install with new graphics, yes.

vilde, if you are happy with your current install, and you are up to date with dist upgrades (especially with h2's script), then why upgrade install to one of the RC releases? You wont be missing much at all.
But if you like trying out the latest that the kanotix team has come up with (and many on this forum do) and like testing the RC installs, or if you are hoping that the latest RC install will fix some problems with your current install, then go for it. |

I know that I could go on with my very good working dist, but I also like to try new thing so I will get the RC3 when it comes.
In fact before I found Kanotix I always tryed a lot of new Linux distributions just for the fun of it and also for finding something new and good to use, but after using Kanotix I never found anything better so for me because I like Kanotix so much it's not so fun to try other distros anymore, but a new Kanotix I have to try. |

Kanotix is debian sid. And a new Kanotix is an updated debian sid. So what Swynndla say is right: you won't be missing much at all. I have been nursing a debian sid install for more than a year, together with another Kanotix 2005 install both dist-upgraded regularly. There's not much different, except I have gnome in one and kde in the other - I actually use xfce in both most times! Having said that, I still intend to download Kanotix 2006 and install it in another partition! I'd advise you keep your "very good working dist" and install 2006 in another partition. There's something about maintaining an installation over a long period of time and keeping it up to date. You do learn things. |

If you want something newer than RC 2 you can get the xdelta patch, convert the RC 2 iso to RC3 then install the RC3 install over the RC2 installation. You will lose any programmes you've added in the mean time though so dist-upgrading RC2 may be a better thing to do until the final release comes out, then install the final version over the d-ued RC2; you can then reload the list of programmes you've added on a once-off basis. I did this with 2005-04-RC17, reinstalled 2005-04 final and then d-ued thereafter till today. I'll continue with this as 2005-04 as itis working fine and 2006-01 will not add very much; some people take a different view and use the new releases to clean up their install. If I want to install on a new computer, I would put the latest RC, d-u then replace with the final version when it arrives.

Ok thanks everybody for help, I do like this
I go on with my dist-upgraded Easter edition and wait until 2006 final is out, then I do a update-install and after that I reinstall my added programs.
Until that I try RC3 and further RC:s on a separate partition. I asume that it's explained how to patch the iso:s with xdelta patch somewhere. |

I've been toying with the same problems as vilde. When folks say "you won't be missing much at all" I wish there was a FAQ on what I would be missing. I'm also wondering if there is a way to diff what you currently have installed with what will be installed, so I can at least see what I need to re-install. If I do an update-install once a year, I'm afraid that I've already pushed 80% of what I installed on top of the previous distro out of my short term memory
If I could diff it, then I could decide if I needed to re-install it... sometimes I don't. |
