I have to install a new mobo and graphics card what is the best way to keep my existing kanotix setup.
Old mobo was P4P800s with ATI card (not 3D driver) new one is NVidia with Nvidia card.
I have main Kanotix fully DU up to last weekend when card went kaput on hdb and another older spare version on hda.

I was thinking after installing hardware start pc see if I get to grub menu so I know hardware is working then install latest rc to hda and copy conf-4 to Kanotix on hdb when that is working install NVidia drivers. Will this work, is there an easier way.

Thanks

Ian

Boot to init 3 then login. Save a backup of your old xorg.conf...then use knxcc (text version) to change driver from ATI to Nvidia.

Thanks Deepdayze I was also thinking something similar but never done this before, init 3 then update scripts and install nvidia but not sure what else, if anything is affected.

Ian, with a change in mobo and graphics card, I'm sure that you will have to reactivate the installation. Hopefully you still have the product key handy! Sehr glücklich

More to your immediate issues, install-nvidia-debian.sh also creates a fresh xorg.conf. You should backup your old xorg.conf although the script also does that, I think. Most hardware are detected at boot but you should be sure your hard disk(s) are the same hda/hdb or fstab should be updated properly.

That's the genius of kanotix.

A good thing before moving the HD is to backup the old install somewhere safe, in case something gets b0rked.

ive moved hds from one mobo/cpu to another several times
just the graphics driver will need changing in your case, the kernel should see the rest all ok
i dont think a re-install is really neded

Thanks for all the replies, HDs are unchanged and new mobo should arrive later today so will just try new driver first on hda spare Kanotix and assuming it goes well my main Kanotix on hdb later.

I will just add some info as it might help someone sometime. My original problem turned out to be a low 5v supply (Antec) 12v and 3.6v still working so giving impression psu was ok. After installing new psu, mobo and graphics card on booting was getting grub error 17 checked hd jumpers ok, Run live Kanotix and HDs are right hda and hdb have right files, eventually found bios was set up to boot from slave, this was with optimised defaults. Anyway all running now and very quiet with new psu and fanless 7300gt graphics card.
