Sometimes when I log out of KDE, the login screen in kdm is partially corrupted and I can't enter a password. Basically, it appears to be giving me a corrupted text console login, barely visible, in the middle of the kdm graphical screen with the swimming penguins. I can generally make the kdm login functional again by trying to switch to some other console screens with Ctrl-Alt-Fn and then back to kdm with Ctlr-Alt-F7 a few times. But when I do Ctrl-Alt-Fn in this situation, I don't actually get any alternate login screens, basically nothing seems to happen. I'm running straight 2006-01-RC3, no upgraded packages, I added OpenOffice 2.0.3-6. Video driver is nv with an nVidia 6600GT card, kdm is version 3.5.4-2+b1 and xorg is 7.1.0-1. Since this machine is set up with two user logins and we're used to logging in and out, this is a small problem. This machine has an AMD dual core cpu. I haven't noticed this problem on a Dell Latitude cpi a366xt laptop, with a PII-366 cpu and neomagic video. |

For the moment, this problem seems resolved, not sure exactly how, though ... I upgraded konqueror, which was tending to crash on me a lot (to be expected sometimes with unstable packages) and I think that brought in an upgrade to kdm, in any case I upgraded kdm, but I'm not sure if that's what appears to have fixed the problem, or not, i.e. not sure if the problem stopped before that. |

well I did not hear of such problems. KDM on RC3 works perfectly. |

Yes, I'm not convinced this was a problem with that version of kdm, either. But it certainly was strange. One thing, I have switched from nv to the nvidia accelerated driver for the time being because I was running GooglEarth (installed with a deb made by googleearth-package). I compiled the nvidia module and modified xorg.conf with nvidia-xconfig. I'm not sure if this is related to the apparent fix or not, I'd have to switch back to nv. Maybe it was something else. Just very weird stuff, I almost wanted to post a screen shot, but not a major problem to me. I do think overall Kanotic RC3 is very good. |
