I installed Kanotix 2005-04 on my pc and I did a du. I am getting an error when I boot and it says
Zitat:
Name or service not known

If I logon to console and try to du again I am getting a post-installation error on ttf-opensymbol and it continues to say
Zitat:
/usr/share/fonts failed to write cache
then at the end it says
Zitat:
sub process post installation script returned error exit status 32

I cannot boot into KDE and I am not sure if it something to do with ttf-opensymbol. I have searched the forum but I have not seen a solution that has worked for me.

h2 script managed to fix the ttf-opensymbol problem but I am now left with the KDE problem.

Zitat:

Unable to open display

kdeinit: Aborting $DISPLAY is not set

ksmserver: cannot connect to X Server

Plus a whole lot other messages.

Can't really help with this specific problem but how about trying the new Kanotix 2006-1 RC4? A dist-upgrade with a fresh Kanotix 2005-4 install leads most probably to quite much unwanted side effects (error messages, strange behaviour etc.)

I agree with Crest, use the new Kanotix 2006-1 RC4

In the meantime you can try (might not work)

Code:
hostname new-name  or   hostname -f /etc/hostname

be sure you changed hosts at least. hostname will be used on next start to select new name.

Have you tried reinstalling your video card drivers ?

PlatinumPlus - can you dist-upgrade again with h2's du script, and after that bit is done, make sure you choose some of the other bits that the script asks you, like the xorg7 fix. And as Piper says, if you have an nvidia card or ati card, get his script to install the appropriate driver.

What graphics card do you have? Do something like:
lspci | grep VGA
to find out.

If you did a dist-upgrade in kde or x your system is probably not fixable. If you tried dist-upgrade without using my script from a 2005-4 it probably failed, there are simply too many fixes in it at this point for you to succeed without the script.

Note: the script will fix some but not all errors if you use it after a failed dist-upgrade, so I can't really offer any help if that's what you did.

I agree, use the update-install feature of 2006-1 and forget trying to fix it unless you really want to try.

PlatinumPlus, what people are saying is, Kanotix 2005-04 is so old that it'd be hard to do a dist-upgrade unless you know what you are doing.

Rumour has it that the next Kanotix 2006 Stable Release isn't that far away. But you may like to install the Preview Release: 2006-01-RC4 now, as it'll be close to the final. It is much more up to date and so is much easier to upgrade or dist-upgrade. Doesn't mean that a dist-upgrade wont break things, it just means there is less chance. Even less of a chance of things breaking if you use h2's d-u script. Only dist-upgrade with caution.

I did a dist-upgrade after going to init 3

I first ran without the script then I tried your script and it fixed "all" errors except for the "Name or service not known".

Unfortunately my DL speed is slow and I had already fetched all the current debs I need to move to the latest and I was hoping to fixit without having to get a new ISO and burning a new CD.

I will try all the tricks posted here then if all fails er eh Traurig

I installed Kanotix 2005-04 and first did an update && upgrade. After that I used h2 script until I got to the part I was stuck in "dependency hell" and kdelib4c2a would not install because kdelib4c2 was still installed and the 3.4.2 kdes needed it. I then used dselect to remove the kdes and proceeded to du and this time around I did not get the ttf-opensymbol errors and I logged on to kde3.5.5 and a brand new Kanotix.

Perhaps h2 should fix that in his script, Plaltinum...good for pointing that out.

Maybe you can write step by step how you finally upgraded your fresh installed Kanotix 2005-4. This may be helpful for other people which want to upgrade without the 2006-1 CD (can be imo even a sticky when it's working). Are you still using the default Kernel from version 2005-4?

I haven't tested 2005-4 vanilla upgrade for about 1 month. Last time it worked, but I can check again easily

Running test, with vanilla 2005-4 install, boot, checked everything, went to init 3, ran script, installed 2.6.18-slh-up-2 kernel, rebooted, started fine, ran script again, started du, pre du fixes of kanotix graphics and dbus, key rings install, forces locales, update, start du, 736 mB

du halts on xerver-xorg-core error.

Ran with install -f option to restart, du continues.

halts on xorg-core error:

dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/xserver-xorg-core_2%3a1.1.1-9_i386.deb (--unpack):
trying to overwrite '/etc/X11/xserver/SecurityPolicy', which is also in package xserver-common

sub process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

And that's it, fails. Must be something in the new xorg 7.1 that breaks the du. That's what it looks like to me.

Ah well, 8 months, not bad...

Here is what I did.

The first time around I install Kanotix2005-04 then when to init 3 and did a du and faced those errors I mentioned above. I then booted with the liveCD and selected the Update Kanotix option.

After "reinstalling/updating" I then did an upgrade not a dist upgrade then I installed the 2.6.18-kanotix-1 kernel (it complained about some libraries and I ignored it).

I rebooted and went back to KDM then back to console and init 3.
At this point I thought of installing Synaptic and it caused my X to be upgraded as well.

I rebooted and back to KDM back to console and init 3.

I downloaded h2 du script and started the du (I had kept my debs so it went fairly quickly on my 23kB/s connection) I did not update the kernel - which one should we use kanotix or slh?

I got to the part I was stuck in "dependency hell" and kdelib4c2a would not install because kdelib4c2 was still installed and the 3.4.2 kdes needed it. I then used dselect to remove the kdes and proceeded to du and this time around I did not get the ttf-opensymbol errors and I logged on to kde3.5.5 and a brand new Kanotix.

Because I had removed some of the kdes using dselect (e.g.kdeprint , kdebase, kdm) I proceeded to install them manually i.e apt-get install kdeprint etc. or by searching the downloaded debs vs what was showing in Synaptic as not installed.

But as I log off it still shows "name or service not known" but I do not get any errors.

h2, does:
dpkg --force-overwrite -i /var/cache/apt/archives/xserver-xorg-core_2%3a1.1.1-9_i386.deb
work?
... or:
dpkg --force-all -i /var/cache/apt/archives/xserver-xorg-core_2%3a1.1.1-9_i386.deb
?
... and then:
apt-get -f install
... does it carry on and finish the d-u?

kano, that did the trick, testing it now. du was able to proceed.

The question is where to insert this fix, and which kanotixes require the fix.

After this hang, I ran install -f one time.

Then that part finished. Then I ran dist-upgrade again and the rest of the packages from yesterday began to get installed.

du hung again, install -f again got it started, went on to setting up phase.

That finished, I ran dist-upgrade again. It finished with no further failures.

However, next kde fails to start. Tried removing kde parts, purge, then reinstalling, doesn't work.

Remember, for question on /etc/fonts/font.conf you need to say 'y', not 'n' as usual.

So this is the end of a newbie coming across this Kanotix site, looking at the Downloads section, and installing the Stable Release (as anyone new to linux would), and d-u'ing to get up to date?

The upcoming Kanotix release is being prepared, we therefore temporarily recommend the recent Preview Release.
Older Releases are available from our Mirrors.

That's what one reads when approaching our Download page, where one lands after clicking on any of the "Stabe Releases" at the front page.

Greetings,
Chris

sywndla. I'd say so unless I can get a fix for the kde issue. I'll see how it goes.

dpkg --force-all --purge xserver-common does work, but then when install -f is run, all kde components are removed first thing.

So that's not going to work.

Not sure if I can find a way to make this work, if not, I'll have to cut off support for older systems on script.

What's the diff between
# aptitude install -f
and
# aptitude upgrade -f
and
# aptitude dist-upgrade -f ?

Are they just more agressive forms of install -f ?

<updated>Version 3.9.29 of the script should now be able to take an older 2005-4 or cebit install through the xserver upgrade without a major problem.

However, be warned, for older installs you are in almost all cases much better off using the update-install option of 2006-10 then using the script from there to do what you want.

I had to do numerous install -f operations, with more dist-upgrades, and the result is it works again.

Now for older installs I am installing the new xorg stuff before du runs, that seems to take care of the problem for now, but I strongly recommend that you keep your installs reasonably up to date as a general rule to avoid this type of issue.

Once again, the script is working now for older installs again.
