If this is in the wrong place, I am sorry. Please move to the right spot.
I had some problems and screwed up my harddrive. No biggie, my mistake. Easy way, used liveCD and wiped it, reinstalled Kanotix 2006-1-RC4. After I rebooted into the hdd version I amended my sources list, got h2' script then I ctrl-alt-f1 and ran the script. During this I updated the kernel, ran the script again and at the end installed radeon drivers. When the script finished, I did fix-res and rebooted. I received this message:
Code:
GRUB loading, please wait...
graphics file "(hd0.0)/boot/message" missing, press a key to continue
When I pressed a key I was taken to a text grub menu. I let it auto select and ended with a text login. After logging in I entered "startx" to try for a gui. This brought me to a basic gui, no background and a debian menu.
How do I get back to the Kanotix grub and login?

Don't worry, it's just a matter of creating a symbolic link, in this case:
ln -s message.hd /boot/message
that's it, and you should see the happy penguins again. But it sounds like somehow or other your whole kanotix graphics package failed to install. I've done a few rc4 installs now, with updating from my script, and I haven't seen this issue.
But this sounds like kanotix graphics for some reason failed, my script does not deal with kanotix graphics unless you are using less than 2006-1 |

h2,
Thanks, I opened xterm, su'ed and enter what you said. The response was File exists. I had kanotix up and running and everything was fine. Could I have messed up something while running the script? The only error message was something to do with compiz package.

If you're using experimental stuff like beryl or compiz you are on your own, I wouldn't put that on a primary install, though I have tried compiz and beryl on a test install. |

Thanks h2. I think that was part of the problem. I tried to install compiz right after the d-u. Learned a lesson there. Also, when I tried to start kde, most of it was missing. I think I over cleaned. Oh well, another lesson there. I ended up just reinstalling and doing another d-u then using the system. Everything works okay now.
Thanks for your help,
John |
