          | I know this subject has been beat to death but I cannot get it to work. I had Easter install, read the tips here and installed googleearth and it worked great. I just did a fresh install of 2006-1 RC4 and repeated the steps that I had taken before but it doesn't work. If I do glxinfo the first few lines are:

 Code:
name of display: :0.0
Xlib:  extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
 display: :0  screen: 0
 direct rendering: No
 server glx vendor string: SGI
 server glx version string: 1.2

I think my problem is that direct rendering is No and I am missing XFree86-DRI. How do I fix this? I have searched this forum and read and tried every suggestion that I find and it still does not work. None of the hardware has changed.

 Thanks,

 john

 I think that's your problem.

 "server glx vendor string: SGI"
... hmmm ... does that support 3d drivers??

What is that card anyway? ... what does:
 lspci | grep VGA
 show you?

          | The card is an ATI Radeon X1600 Pro. It is an AGP card and has 512 megs of ram on board. Purchased it a few months ago before I found Kanotix and thought I wanted to run Vista. Then along came Piper and showed me the errors of my way. Like I said, with Easter installed, it worked great.
 Requested output:

 Code:
john@Kanotix-Main:~$ lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV530 [Radeon X1600]

          | ohhhh sorry I missed the "and it worked great" part.
One of my pc's has an ati card, and it's very sensitive to change, and even upgrading the kernel can cause me to lose direct rendering. So when I finally managed to get it going (ie that day was had a good d-u and then installed the ati graphics drivers with h2's script and it worked) then I've been too scared to change it since!

          | Kano,
Thanks, I am going to try that when I sign off here.

 Swynndla,

Probably what I should do but I just like to play with things.

          | Tried the instructions from Kano above and everything is still the same. It doesn't work. If I run flxgears they work and seem to move okay but I get this message:
 john@Kanotix-Main:~$ glxgears
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).
 john@Kanotix-Main:~$

 Thanks,

 John
