The mainframe in "2001: A Space Odyssey"
apt-cache show hal
Description: Hardware Abstraction Layer
HAL provides an abstract view on hardware.
.
This abstraction layer is simply an interface that makes it possible to
add support for new devices and new ways of connecting devices to the
computer, without modifying every application that uses the device.
It maintains a list of devices that currently exist, and can provide
information about those upon request. |

dedot,
don't know what the issue should have been, I use 0.5.8.1-2 from Sid on my three boxes and do not experience any problems.
If it is about icons on the desktop (somebody was complaining about that, but i don't know if it was a hal-issue), I can't say, I shut down the hardware-icons on the desktop.
In init 3 you also can do:
apt-get remove --purge hal
apt-get install hal [plus everything which was deleted with it]
reboot
Should work fine then.

dedot,
updating hal to unstable (0.5.8.1-3) is safe again.
Mounted devices via media:/ in konqueror (or krusader) and their desktop icons are visible again.
Greetings, Tom |
