For the past week I thought I was a real doh head . I would do something to bork my system, I would reinstall, the same thing would happen, again and again. This last time I was very careful in that after every upgrade and package installation I would reboot to make sure that it wasn't my fault that things went bad. Because I have a radeon card the last thing I did was to do a video driver install using du-fixes. The driver called for was fglrx-8.28.8. Well wouldn't you know it. After getting a good installation and the script signalled for init 5, I again get stuck at the KDE login screen and can get no farther. Is there a way that I can go back to the driver that live CD used? By the way I installed kernel 2.6.18.2-slh-up-1 to see if I could work out what ever was the prob and still am stuck . Or if I can't back track, does any one know what could be the prob or a work around? |

Your problem is very rare, but you can boot into text mode by adding a
2
to the grub line. Then you use
knxcc
and use the graphics card redetection routine. That should remove fglrx from your pc. Are you using onboard ATI gfx? I heard about some problems which combined shared and dedicated video solutions. Then only disabling the dedicated memory would help (in BIOS). |

Thank you. Fixed. Since making the change to Linux from M$ about 8 months ago, it never ceases to amaze me that once you can properly define what the prob is (for a noobie like me that can at times be a chalenge) most of the time it is a very easy thing to fix what every the prob is. Besides which beyond question the best IT help forums you could ever find. |
