I was investigating kanotix and came across this review http://all-things-linux.blogspot.com/2011/06/kanotix-2011-05-hellfire-review.html This was a review of the 2011-05 release and from it.
Zitat:
My screen resolution was properly detected, as were my network and wireless interfaces, but no networks showing up in KNetworkManager. A quick check confirmed that in fact neither the broadcom-sta driver nor the brcm80211 firmware were installed. So my hardware is recognized as claimed, but not supported.

I have a broadcom driver so I want to sus this out before install. As I don't have a hard wired connection i need to download any requirements before install.

I found a reference on the aptosid manual http://manual.aptosid.com/en/nf-firm-en.htm#fw-detect Would this work with kanotix? Would this be what I would need to do?
Zitat:
Should you need to prefetch firmware .debs, to put on a usb-key to transfer the files to another computer, you can download them as either a zip or tar.gz file from http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unoff ... d/current/ and extract it to a folder called firmware, you should see a number of .deb files.

Next download http://packages.debian.org/sid/firmware-linux-free*.deb and add it to all the other debs in the folder you extracted the non-free firmware to. Then transfer them with the stick to the computer that needs the non-free firmware and:

dpkg -i firmware-linux-nonfree*.deb

What kind of Broadcom chipset do you have?

If you have a laptop with a Broadcom 43xx chipset. this Ubuntu wiki article is a good guide to getting it going if you can download the needed packages to a USB stick from an Internet-connected computer and then plug it into the laptop after you install Kanotix.

You'll want to download and use Debian Squeeze packages (search engeine at http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages ), rather than Ubuntu packages.

Keep in mind that Aptosid is based on Sid, while Kanotix is based on Squeeze. I haven't tried their method yet.

It depends on the chipset if you only need firmware or the wl driver. In case you need wl follow

!wl

in the irc. wl is the binary broadcom driver.
