HI!! ALL!!...I just changed my distro to Kanotix..I change as needed.. But stay with a DEBIAN type...the longest was Knoppix about 11 mo.. Next was mepis at <6 mo. The Ubuntu curse was the reason for the change..how long I stay with Kanotix depend's if thay stay close to the parent source DEBIAN.. the repos in Kanotix are more current and a cross repo software install not break anything yet...Ubuntu will break with the slightest push...libary hell is the most comman problem there..

Kanotix IS Debian other than the few things devil28 posted. Welcome. You will love it.
I love it. The LiveCD was my first introduction to Linux almost 2 years ago. Been running it installed on my HD ever since.
Personally don't see what the big hype is all about where Ubuntu is concerned. Apt-get grade and apt-get dist-upgrade keep my system updated. Why the big fuss over "releases"? |

Ubuntu is a weird idea, that weirdly seems to have become popular... At least it keeps all the Ubuntu people away from us lot! |

Kanotix is the only Linux I've tried that just works. Tried Ubuntu, Mepis, PCLOS....none of them give me X without tweaking. Redhat wouldn't give me sound, even with tweaking, and Mandrake....I'm not even going into it. Been with Kanotix for a couple (wow...it's been that long??) years now, and never even thought of looking at another distro/os for my main. |

I was a "refugee" from Mepis more than a year ago. (As a matter of fact, I first heard of Kanotix on the Mepis Lovers forum.) I tried Kanotix and loved it. Been here in Kano Land ever since.
Here's the secret for happiness with a Kanotix hard drive installation. Before you perform a dist-upgrade, check the main page for any alerts or warnings. If you don't see any, follow this procedure.
CTRL + ALT + F1
su
(root password)
init 3 (if it seems to hang at this point, just press ENTER)
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
reboot
If you see an alert or warning, hold off until devil or one of the other Kanotix team members gives you the OK. I strongly recommend that you put your /home directory on a separate partition. If you break your installation, all of your data is safe.
It's a superb distro. Have fun and enjoy. |

Welcome! Please join us on IRC in #kanotix for any questions you may have. You can almost always get quick results there and we don't care what your Linux experience is. You can also get answers to some of the 'unmentionable' topics that for legal reasons are not allowed to be discussed here in the forum. Enjoy. |

Welcome from me as well! In addition to #kanotix, you can come chill with some of the english speakers in #kanotixer-en for offtopic and Kanotix stuff. You will have a lot of fun sticking with this distro, because I sure have. |

Welcome from me too.
Well I use both Kanotix 2005-04 and Mepis 3.4.3 (the debian one) and Michael7's advice is sound when upgrading.
The main thing you will miss at first with kanotix has to do with nvidia/ati (but there is a great script for both that has never failed me) and video/audio stuff that you can only get info from, due to legal problems, off the irc(if you need it).
Apart from that, you'll soon be whizzing and hopefully enjoying kanotix like we all do here. |
