I just did a hard-disk install of Kanotix-2005-4 on my home computer
(with a dial up connection) from a CD. I want to remove openoffice suite
from this install. How do I go about it?

Please let someone like Kano & co. verify this, I am not sure this works or if there is a easier way.
apt-get remove --purge ash-kanotix ooo-kanotix openoffice.org2
or
dpkg -r openoffice.org
This will remove the openoffice.org package
You have to remove the installation of OpenOffice.org and the configurations files in your $HOME directory
- rm -rf .openoffice .user60.rdb .sversionrc ; rm -rf /path/to/your/openoffice.org/installation
Please don't try this till someone can confirm that this is correct |

I have used dpkg or aptitude or adept or synaptic or kpackage to remove the installed version. Then as you said, remove those files in /home/<dir> that I wanted to replace.
If you just want to remove it completely, that should do it.
************
If you want to install a later version that hasn't made it to the debian repo,
this works for me:
I reinstall from the package from the OOo site from within the directory
where it is unpacked:
# alien -iv *.rpm
and then do the same with the LangPack desired, from it's directory.
and then install the debian menu deb with:
dpkg -i *debian-menus*
and then run OOo while online and install any needed but not included dictionaries.
Just finished installing the OOo2.0.3rc6 in this manner. But don't rush, there is an rc7
coming soon.
As to removing these, with --purge ash-kanotix ooo-kanotix, it is probably a good idea
since they probably won't be used by another installation.
But I didn't know about them nor look for them. |

Using alien and RPMs on Debian is strongly discouraged for system integrity reasons, btw. OOo 2.0.3 rc6 is in sid. |

Just got new OOo today, still does not use Freetype 2.2 as it seems (fonts still look terrible and I need to use AA for usable screen-display).
Version: 2.0.2.99.2.0.3

ish,
A suggestion would be to install the Easter release instead. Open Office is not included with it. (That'what I have installed now.)

Hmm, why did openoffice get replaced with koffice in the last release? Personally OOo is my preferred office suite. |

If memory serves, Kano omitted OO to conserve space on the CD. (I like OO too and it's easy to install.) |

I've seen this before but don't really understand why it is claimed?
In order to test betas there is currently no other way to get them installed that I know of. I much preferred the old way of tar.gz from OOo, but they are no longer available. Such is progress.
But you are correct, the most stable OOo for Debian, probably comes from the repositories.
OOo should be installed via debs from the Debian repositories or other reliabale source. |

I would strongly recommend that you keep using your
old OpenOffice.org version 2.0.2-rc4. Update to OOo2.0.3rc6 at your own risk.
Remember that an rc is still a beta version and is not recommended for everyday use.
The OOo203rc6 is dangerous for everyday use.
There is an rc7 which it is claimed fixes the corrupted xml problem.
I installed the version based on rc6 from the Debian repo but it would not render
graphics in a document I prepared the day before, while the tried and true OOo202rc4
worked as expected. I have been having problems since OOo203rc3.
I do not know how to reinstall an older Debian version from the repository based on OOo202rc4. Would like to know so I can give it a try to avoid having to use alien or Windows to try to get some work done.
Thanks for the tips. |

Because RPM distros have a different policy than debian on where to place files. Alien does not (cannot) correct for this. You can end up with files fighting over ownership. |
