Since I install M$ fonts and upgraded Firefox and Thunderbird
I've noticed stuff like this turning up in some Firefox pages.

no, your setup is for some reason missing chinese unicode character support, which is what I'm seeing. In other words, I see lines of chinese characters, just like I'm supposed to see, while you are seeing the unicode numeric representations. Why that is I don't know since I dont' remember installing the chinese language pack. Although I might have now that I think of it because of some sites I want to be able to see the chinese characters. |

You might not be using a unicode font as your default font in Firefox, and/or you might have Firefox set to always display text using the default fonts you (or it) set. You can change these settings from Edit > Preferences > Content > Fonts and Colors > Advanced.
Thunderbird has a similar font dialog box. |

I'm not sure what to do here.
In Firefox Edit > Preferences > Content > Fonts and Colors > Advanced
Default Character Encoding is Western (ISO-8859-1). I could set this to
a unicode font but which one of the available seven?
Also in Thunderbird..
Prefs > Display > Fonts Configure the fonts used by Thunderbird is
Western and Outgoing and Incoming mail are both Western (ISO-8859-1)
which seems correct to me.
Perhaps one of you could tell me what your settings are in Firefox and
Thunderbird?
Thanks in advance. |

Yes piper that's what I would expect.
(By the way I won't state the fonts I installed as it
may not be appropriate do so on this site.)
It seems clear to me that I'm missing at least one
font set.
Is there a method of generating a list of fonts from
the command line? If there is could we perhaps
compare lists and discover which font is missing? |

Not sure about the cli, but you can look in control center > system admin > font installer (log in) and check there. I always use freesans but at the moment i'm using tahoma which i grabbed from xp |

Backing up for a minute, if you run "kcharselect" and set the font to Sans Serif, then type "4E0D" into the "Unicode code point" box, what do you see? Do you see an Asian letter, or just <edit> see a square in the box? |

You need to install the chinese character set, that's not native. It's not a firefox setting. I'm using western iso 8859, standard.
I'd put a screen shot showing those characters displaying fine, but just take my word for it. |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia: ... rs#Chinese
common guys, install the chinese language pack, ok, and stop wondering why you can't see something your system has no support for.
I can't remember which deb is it, the below i think is out of date
* Traditional Chinese (Big5): ttf-arphic-bkai00mp
* Simplified Chinese (GB): ttf-arphic-gbsn00lp
* Korean: ttf-baekmuk
* Japanese: ttf-kochi-mincho
http://lwn.net/Articles/175272/ :::
i believe your chinese support problem will be fixed if you install the following packages, plus the ones apt will recommend when you apt-get install:
kde-i18n-zhcn language-support-zh language-support-zh-cn language-pack-zh
the command "apt-cache search language-support" will show you all of the available languages.
================================
just double checked, I think I'm using these ones:
firefox-locale-zh-cn - Firefox Chinese (China) language package
firefox-locale-zh-tw - Firefox Chinese (Taiwan) language package
I can't see the chinese characters in konqueror, I can see them in opera 9
=================================
nope, sorry, I don't have those installed, I must have the kde language pack for chinese installed, can't remember its name though. I can't remember how I did it, but I remember doing it because I needed to see chinese characters on websites, it wasn't hard though. None of the links I'm finding seem to be the right ones though. |

h2, I have none of those fonts installed, yet the characters in the page above are displayed fine. You're right, his problem is not related to a Firefox setting. |

If it were me, I'd try remove the xfonts and reinstall them ... eg I'd do (in init 3):
dpkg -l | grep xfont
... and for each one I'd remove them like:
apt-get remove --purge xfonts-base
... etc until "dpkg -l | grep xfont" showed no more lines, and then I'd start installing some of them (not all of them): but I'd make sure I had most of the following:
ii libxfont1 1.0.0-4 X11 font rasterisation library
ii xfonts-100dpi 1.0.0-2 100 dpi fonts for X
ii xfonts-100dpi-transcoded 1.0.0-2 100 dpi fonts for X (transcoded from ISO 10646-1
ii xfonts-75dpi 1.0.0-2 100 dpi fonts for X
ii xfonts-75dpi-transcoded 1.0.0-2 75 dpi fonts for X (transcoded from ISO 10646-1)
ii xfonts-base 1.0.0-3 standard fonts for X
ii xfonts-base-transcoded 6.9.0.dfsg.1-6 standard fonts for X (transcoded from ISO 10646-
ii xfonts-bolkhov-cp1251-75dpi 1.1.20001007-6 75 dpi CP1251 encoded Cyrillic fonts for X (Cyr-
ii xfonts-bolkhov-cp1251-misc 1.1.20001007-6 Character-cell CP1251 encoded Cyrillic fonts for
ii xfonts-encodings 1.0.0-5.1 Encodings for X.Org fonts
ii xfonts-intl-european 1.2.1-6 International fonts for X -- European
ii xfonts-konsole 3.4.3-3 fonts used by the KDE's Konsole
ii xfonts-scalable 1.0.0-4 scalable fonts for X
ii xfonts-terminus 4.20-2 Fixed-width fonts for fast reading
ii xfonts-utils 1.0.0-6 X Window System font utility programs
Then I'd do:
fix-fonts
Then I'd go into init 5 and see if firefox is happy.
Then I'd do:
apt-get install msttcorefonts
... but then again, I'm known to stuff things up quite easily |

eco2geek, I don't either, I just checked, I can't remember how I got the chinese character support, it must be a locale thing, but I can't remember what I did to get that support, I do remember it was very easy, which is why I dont' remember how I did it, it was too easy to really make an impression in my head.
Basically, that's unicode, if I remember right, and that's all it is. Unicode full simply supports all conceivable human readable characters through those numeric sequences. I learned a bit about that because I put up some unicode chinese stuff on a site, in windows I had to install the chinese language pack to view the unicode, I wish I could remember what I needed to do in kde but I can't.
Just checked my own unicode chinese stuff, yes, it displays fine, I assume konqueror isn't displaying it because it doesn't have proper unicode support or something.
====
Ok, I just checked with another install that I know I never added chinese anything to, it displays the characters fine too, so that's why I don't remember what I did to make it display it, I didn't do anything. At least not that I remember.
I guess if I poked around I could figure out what I did
The one thing I did do now that I think of it was to import all my windows 2000 fonts I had installed into my kanotix installs, that might be what it is, I simply have the fonts installed? Not sure, might be the reason, I know I did that on both installs.
I'd have to check another install to see if that's what it is. |

If you log out of KDE to kdm, go to a console (e.g. with Ctrl-Alt-F1), get root, stop kdm with "init 3" and then run "dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig-config", choose autohinting, automatic, and use bitmaps, then go back to X with "init 5"...does that help? (And do you have the ttf-freefont package installed?) |

eco2geek. Bingo!!
The Chinese characters are now displaying properly.
I've always kept a log book of changes I make to my
system and notice I did a "dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig-config"
a short while ago. In my ignorance I must have accepted
the defaults (native, always, no).
Any idea which selection caused the display error?
Thanks guys. I've seen a few forums in my time but IMHO the
Kanotix forum is the best and quickest at solving problems.
(Something to do with the quality of people who recoginise
Kanotix as the best Linux distro around?) |

FF has the option: allow pages to use their charsets. normaly unchecked means No.
other option, guess used Charset or use default Charset-coding
Konq. has a automatic charset choosing or default charset: iso-8859-X |
