Titel: how can I put those useless Windoze keys to good use?

Hi,
Most of my keyboards have the inevitable Windoze keys (the one with the Windows logo painted on). They serve no purpose right now, but they are located in a neat spot on the keyboard, right between the alt and ctrl keys.
Linux clearly sees them as pressing them stops the screensaver of stops the sleep mode.
Is there a way to put them to good use, like starting an application for example?

| Yes there is ...........at least in fluxbox. I'm sure it is the same for kde if you go to kcontrol/regionnal acces/ keyboards shortcuts |

don't know what the menu-points are called in the english version (use de here) but you
can set key shortcuts somewhere in kcontrol. and in almost every kde-application you can use it
for global key shortcuts (e.g. skip one track in amarok without having to set the focus to it  ).
so in fact the win key is far more useful in linux than it was in win  |

Control Center > Regional & Accessibility > Keyboard Shortcuts > Command Shortcuts tab ... I browse to where an app is and easily set the custom short cut  |

| oh ... but what I said will only start the app ... how do you do tricky things like "skip one track in amarok without having to set the focus to it" ? |

I use the windows-keys to show the desktop and to open konqueror, other useless keys to switch desktops or open konsole (Sleep, Wake Up, Power, Rollen, Pause) and I deactivated Caps Lock.
1) Start xev in a konsole to identify the keycode of the free key
2) Assign the keycode to a function key in /etc/xmodmap.conf.
e.g. "keycode 115 = F15"
3) Assign F13 - F24 to actions in Control Center
4) "xmodmap /etc/xmodmap.conf" in autostart
"Go to previous desktop" = "Wake Up" is my favourite key. |

I tried the Control Center > Regional & Accessibility > Keyboard Shortcuts > Command Shortcuts tab path.
I tried to link the Windows keys to Firefox. I got to the 'configure shortcut' but then I ran into trouble. While I could enter any 'normal' keys, I tried pressing the 'win' key which appeared in the appropriate box (as 'win+') but *only when depressed*. as soon as i let go of the key it disappeared from the box. I tried pressing the 'ok' key while pressing on the windows key, but that did nor work.
Did anyone have the same issue? Is there a way around this? |

hey vees,
I know what you are saying... it wants to use the Win keys kind of like ctrl or alt, where you hold down teh win key and press another in order to get the desired function.
I can't help you if you want simply to press the win key and get firefox or whatever, but here's how I use the win key:
win+f -- firefox
win+t -- thunderbird
win+q -- konqueror
win+3 -- k3b
and so forth
It's the same as using alt+whatever. The good thing about using the win key like this is that there are no shortcuts for specific programs linked to the win key, so you never accidentally do something in a maximized program that you didn't expect/intend.

I do not use the kontrolcenter for applying short-keys, I go to the menu and edit the menu-title itself (right click, and you will see what I mean, I only have german language versions here). Start it, and the menu-editor pops up.
There is a little button to adjust shortcuts (bottom right), apply what you want (mine is eg. Windoze+w for starting OO-Writer). And you have to save the changes (don't forget that, I did not realize that for just a while).

That may have been the reason why I renamed my windows keys by F15 and F16. |
