Hi! Yesterday i did an dist-upgrade. This was followed by the 'update-scripts-kanotix.sh' and 'install-nvidia-debian.sh'. Unfortunately
the monitor just goes mostly white and the machine hangs, needing a reboot.
I can get X to load properly only if i change the 'nvidia' occurrence in 'xorg.conf' to 'vesa', but don't really want this as screen looks very poor.
I have also updated to the latest kernel and used h2's script.
I have repeated the nvidia install several times. The message says that it is patching /usr/src/nv/conftest.sh and then notes that "Your driver installation has been altered" and says it will attmept to uninstall first. All seems to go well until X is fired up. The /var/log/nvidia-intaller.log file seems to confirm that all was well and no errors are reported.
So any advice on how to get the nvidia driver working again please. How can I test that everything is ok without loading up X? |

are you sure, your dist-upgrade went through all the way?
try one now and see if it runs normal
check if you have gcc 4.1 installed with: apt-cache policy gcc

gcc 4.1 is installed:
The only query is that apt-get update has been giving errors lately:
I have just ignored these, assuming they were not important. Was that ok? |

Thanks Kano. Yes I am aware of this and have done it several times, and another dist-upgrade. The nvidia installer log ends:

executing: '/sbin/ldconfig'...
executing: '/sbin/depmod -aq'...

-> Driver file installation is complete.
-> Running post-install sanity check:

-> Installation of the NVIDIA Accelerated Graphics Driver for Linux-x86
(version: 1.0-8762) is now complete. Please update your XF86Config or
xorg.conf file as appropriate; see the file
/usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/README.txt for details.
so it seems to have been completed ok. I am at a loss as to what to do next. |
