My Brother hl-1430 was working fine in KDE 3.4 but after an upgrade to 3.5.1 it still works with Open office or any Gnome based program such as Gramps, Abiword and gedit. However as soon as I try to print with KDE i get the following message.
An error occurred while retrieving the printing list - Connection to cups server failed - Host not found. This message appears when trying to install using Kprint manager. I used loalhost:631 to set it up.
I have spent quite a lot of time brwsing the web for an answer.
Any help would be appreciated.

Take the time to read this thread
http://kanotix.com/PNphpBB2-viewtopic-t-18797.html
Try the post by piper fix first .
Important to have a look at Control Centre > Periphs>Printers, bottom right hand side in tiny font is a line that reads """ listening on """ and it should say """ localhost:631""".
If it is listening on ""/var/run/cups/cups.sock"' try the post by piper fix first . its one Page 1 of the thread .
If that doesnt work, see page 6 and the Swyndia post talking about radicals post.
it took me a couple of goes to fix it, i found --purge cupsys and and install cupsys (only) then #of var/run/cups/cup.sock. then /etc/init.d/cupsys restart. fixed me up.. then i installed guten and hplip |
