Hello,
I'm a windows user and I want to switch to linux. So far I've been trying different live cd linuxes. And Debian based linuxes seem to be the only ones working on my laptop (Acer Travelmate 3004). Also I would like my linux installation to be on an USB memory stick.

I have a whole bunch of questions:

1) Does any one happen to know if the Acer Travelmate 3004 can boot from USB? If not then how can I test it?

2) Why there is not any USB stick version to download? Can I make the bootable USB kanotix in windows, or do need to make it from the live cd, or what???

3) All the cd downloads seem old. Is kanotix a dead project or when will there be a new version?

4) Is it possible to burn a kanotix cd image to dvd?

5) My laptop that I described above supports the screen resolution of 1280*800. How can change the resolution?

1) Don't know. Check in your bios, maybe?
2) Probably because this isn't one of the 'really tiny' distributions- like DamnSmall or Mepis.
3) The last *stable* release is "old". EASTER RC4 is pretty new, and with a dist-upgrade it will be bleeding edge. "old" around here is still newer than LOTS of other distributions. Things are far from dead. Nobody has told me anything, but I don't think there will be another stable release until things calm down in the repositories a little bit. The debian branch the distro works with is seeing lots of changes at the moment, as I understand it.
4) Don't know. I don't burn DVD's. You could try and let us know...
5) at the boot screen choose english with dma and acpi, then type "screen=1280x800" minus the quotes of course, to get your native resolution.

First of all, this a great subnotebook. I envy you. As to your questions, the answer to the first one is "Yes". You can test this by downloading Kanotix, burning it to cd and booting your computer off the cd using the external optical drive that came with the notebook. Don't forget to add cheat code "bootusb2" at the boot screen. This should work right away. If it doesn't, check bios settings for boot sequence.

Running Kanotix from a thumb drive is not a good idea as this distribution is optimized for hard drive installation. You can give it a thorough test drive by running it off the cd; and, if you like it, we will help you to install it on your notebook.

Your third question makes me question the sincerity of your query. But I am a polite person, so all I say is this: Easter-RC4 is fairly recent, and, compared to that, Windows XP is a putrid carcass.

Thanks for answering. I'm also glad to hear that Kanotix is live and well.

I'm dowloading the easter cd at the moment. I could consider installing Kanotix on my harddrive, but that arises some questions. I'm still going to need windows occasionally. I tried ubuntu on my old laptop once but when I reinstalled windows the grub boot loader got wiped away. Will I have the same problem with Kanotix? If so, how can I easily restore the boot loader without completely reinstalling Kanotix?

@jumpyLinux: I have a "Poormans"install of Kanotix-Easter on a 1GB usb-stick, works well.
All details as to howto can be found in the FAQ or the manual - and the forum helps if you do not succeed in implementing what you want.....

Yes it will get wiped, but is easily fixed by using the live cd and restoring grub, takes about 1 minute Smilie and then both Kanotix and Windows will show in the grub boot menu

Our installer from CD includes an option for restoring Grub, the boot loader.
Greetings,
Chris

(couldnt sleep, so i wandered back in here)

be carefull with your burn. You must burn DAO

DAO stands for Disc At Once. The recorder burns the entire disc in one session.Kanotix uses high compression technology (not the same Knoppix does);special care is needed when burning the CD;use high quality CD-media [or DVD+RW] and burn in DAO-mode not faster than 8x

Read this carefully
