Hello all, installed xfce4 but I can only log in as root. xfce4 goes back to the kdm login if I try to log in as normal user. Any suggestions? tia.

Thanks for your input piper.
I tried your suggestion to purge, remove xfce4. Then apt-get update, apt-get install xfce4 but to no avail. Perhaps I should try removing anything with xfce... say using k package and start again. What annoys me is that I have xfce running on another box with no probs.

Hi Laurie, yes give that a try, post back with the results, even google is not that helpful with this one, I use xfce myself, but use kde more and havent seen this problem myself yet. |

Nor I. Using xfce in kanotix and a pure debian install. With kdm and gdm. No problems. Seems like a permissions problem. Have you tried setting up a new user and see if you can use xfce there? |

Thanks stryder, you are right on the money. I set up a new user and can start xfce for that user. So I guess this is a permissions prob. Not sure where to start to fix up the normal user, would appreciate any suggestions. |

as root, chown -R user:user /home/user will reset everything in your home to user. If this doesn't work, try moving the .config folder in your home, eg mv /home/user/.config /home/user/oldconfig. This folder contains all your xfce settings. Moving it will allow xfce to create a fresh set of default settings. Hope this helps. |
