My script selects Ubuntu/Dapper for Xorg 6.9 and 7.0 and Ubuntu/Edgy for 7.1. Mainly because these targets are well tested and the Debian targets are not. In order to use em i would have to fix em (I have a fix in it for Debian/experimental but prefer the Edgy target). You would not get another driver with another target. Just the package names differ a little bit.

Kano I am very greatful for all your hard work. Without it I would find linux intimidating. I also understood from the beginning why you picked the sites you did. I just got hit at a very bad time as far as packages was concerned, and because of my very limited experience, had no knowledge as to how to get around my broken package prob. I still think that as far as OS systems are concerned. The debian version of Linux is the best out there, not only from what it can do right now but the vast improvements that have been made in the last 4 months alone.

Seems like the current fglrx script cannot detect my old ati card. My long story short:
I always try to keep my system "current" , so I used h2's script to d-u it several times now. Before this last d-u I was running the latest stable kernel 2.6.17.13-slh-up-1 with the reinstalled fglrx already, with no troubles at all.
After this last d-u I was unable to finish the graphics part of the script, for the script gave me an error message of no ati cards on my system. Re-runnig the original script from Kano, outside h2's procedure, gave me (obviously) the same message.
Any idea ?

My system from infobash:
Host/Kernel/OS "VortexA" running Linux 2.6.17.13-slh-up-1 i686 [ KANOTIX 2005-04 LITE ]
CPU Info Intel Pentium 4 512 KB cache flags( - ) clocked at [ 2400.025 MHz ]
Videocard ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LY X.Org 7.1.0 [ 1024x768 @60hz ]
Network cards Realtek RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+, at port: 7000
Processes 85 | Uptime 2:01 | Memory 294.949/502.918MB | HDD TOSHIBA MK3017GAP Size 30GB (60%used) | Client Shell | Infobash v2.50rc17

P.S.: On a different machine with a slightly newer ati card (9700), I had no problems at all.

TKS a lot.

For a few minutes that script did not accept legacy r200 cards, but currently it does accept r200 and newer. Show me this:

Hope this helps.

Thank You for answering, Kano.

Impossible that your card ever was supported by fglrx driver. Thats a RV100 card, not even R200.

Kano,
I'm sure you're right and I've no reasons and no skills to dispute your analysis, but maybe just for wizardry, I'm sure fglrx was someway running till this last update.
I used to test it again some game, like chromium, just to test the accel functions. Before the d-u the game was graphically fluid, after it was not.
And, before this last d-u, the compilation of fglrx was giving me a go condition for each of its steps till the shell prompt.
After all, I had to recompile it when I updated the kernel at least, and all went very well then ..... .
I can live with it, just a tech perplexity, and be it clear, you're doing a great work with kanotix and I'm a happy user, ati or not.

Thanks, anyway.
morris

BTW: I gave a second run to h2's script, to verify the error message it gives me. First, it recognizes my card in the "graphics driver installer" section as 2) radeon, which is as usual; Second, after processing /etc/X11/xorg.conf it hangs on "installing radeon/fglrx driver now" with an "Error: No ATI RADEON/FIREGL adapter found." message.

Small update.

After further (little) investigation, I found this last d-u left me with xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.6.2-2 installed, but *not* any of the other fglrx packages available (six), and namely fglrx-driver 8.28.8-1.
If I select that driver, it tries to remove the whole xorg installation.

At this point I don't know if this is what xorg is supposed to have installed, or something failed during my d-u, or is a matter to sit and wait for some xorg bug to be corrected .....

Any clue would be really appreciated.

xorg is being updated bit by bit so I can only suggest that you keep updating until it settles down.

You may not install fglrx on your system, that's absolutely wrong and your card was never supported by fglrx!
