In a few days I'll be testing Kanotix x86-64 on my new machine. Currently it runs CentOS-64. I find the normal methods of package management on it don't support selecting 32-bit RPMs. I'm forced to download them manually and install by trial and error from the commandline, discovering dependencies by failure.

Does Kanotix make it simpler? Even if it's just apt-get, does it offer working options to pull in 32-bit packages?

While I'm at it: Having used Kanotix in the past, I note 32-bit is optimized for i586 or i686. What optimizations are used for 64-bit?

In my opinion, you would be better off using the 32 bit version, I would wait for more feedback from users that use the 64 bit. Winken

Kanotix 64 is entirely pure 64bit code, and almost all of Debian Sid is already there in 64bit - at your fingertips with apt-get install. While other distributions mix with 32bit libs, Debian does not. That makes a very fast and stable system. However, there is a small price: If you need something not already designed & compiled for 64bit (most prominent are Flash, Wine and the nasty Microsoft stuff you need to enjoy commercial music/video), you'll need to set up a small dummy 32bit system (a "chroot") to do so.
More here: http://kanotix.com/index.php?module=pnWikka&tag=ChrootEinrichten
However, Kanotix 32 runs with almost the same speed on 64bit machines, so if you depend on those 32bit apps it's probably the more practical solution.
Greetings,
Chris

hello
dowt install kanotix 64 its to old, if you do a dist-upgrade it will upgrade 900 p or so. one way to go is to install gnome and then take the upgrade bit by bit.
i run deb64 on my box (amd 64 3000) with kanotix 2.6.17.11-slh64-smp and it is fast. in chroot i hav a full gnome 32 with flash, java openoffice, i think you shood try a 64bit.

I use a dist-upgraded kanotix-64 with most recent kernel as my main production machine, and our main web server for kanotix.com also runs on the same configuration. I agree that the dist-upgrade now from 2005-04-64 might be a bigger one, but it's worth the action. Alternatively you might consider using Easter-32-RC4 until the next release is published for 64bit.
However, Openoffice, Java and Gnome are already available, so there is no need any more to chroot them.
Greetings,
Chris

If I were planning to run 32-bit, it would be FreeBSD. nVidia refuses to make a 64-bit driver for FreeBSD, or I'd not bother you folks at all. Winken Honestly, the mobo is fully 64-bit, and sound works poorly in 32-bit mode.

A part of what I'm doing is testing the 64-bit distros, to see if there is something more satisfactory than CentOS. It works, but it could surely be better. Since I don't relish a long dist-upgrade, I'll wait for the next release of Kanotix-64. Thank you for the links.

Thanks, Michael. I'm flattered.

I managed to get my new harddrive early, so decided to take the plunge. While I tried doing the dist-upgrade on my own (1000+ packages), I ran into trouble. Then I stumbled across the script (du-fixes-h2.sh) which took care of everything nicely. While nothing could be perfect, this is just fine for me, and certainly a better package selection than CentOS or SuSE. Sadly, we are still waiting on the OO.org common package to be patched and built for AMD64. For now, KOffice is getting the job done.

slam, I am intrigued by the idea of of a chroot jail for 32-bit. After reading the link you offered, I have to wonder if there is any way this can be scripted? Kanotix Community seems to be doing so very well with scripts, I'm really impressed. While it's of no great importance to me, I'd think 64-bit users would really want to see it scripted, if it were possible.

For Open Office add this to your repo list
deb http://people.debian.org/~rene/openoffi ... 0.3/amd64/ ./

You can follow the progress here

(BTW saving does work Winken )

Well, I am reluctant to throw wet blankets about, but I ran into a great deal of trouble. I suppose it's mostly a matter of hardware not being compatible:

- constant popping in the VIA 8237 sound system (not heard in other OSes)
- fonts would never quite clear up, even after extensive tweaking in xorg.conf and fonts display config

There were also a lot of things not setup properly after the update. Maybe I'm lazy, but these are things I never had to do in Linux: system mail, logwatch, firewall, & miscellaneous services. A couple of years ago, I'd have been glad to learn how to tinker with them, but I no longer have the leisure. I'm not demanding changes, just explaining what made me unhappy. I'll try Kanotix-64 some other time.
