Hey, I'm new to this environment and was wondering if I could ask a few questions and get some answers. One of which is dual booting. I keep hearing about Dual Booting windows-kanotix. I've been looking through some of the topics and found that it means having windows and kanotix installed on the same pc but can only boot one of them.

But, then I browse the gallery and found an interesting screenshot:
http://galerie.kanotix.de/data/media/6/Winkano.jpg

First off I don't really know if that's one screenshot of two different ones put together, but I'm assuming it's one at the moment.
I'm wondering if this is "Dual Boot" also. As in, being able to use windows while in linux. If yes, how do I go about doing that?

Secondly, Do I need windows installed to run .exe files in Linux? Is there something like "Wine" in kanotix that allows you to run .exe files? I was just wondering, because I also saw a screenshot of a kanotix installation with counterstrike and starcraft installed, or is there a linux install for those games?

I just wanted to understand a few things before installing. If it's possible to get the best of both worlds (win+linux) without having windows I would rather not waste any space for windows at all. Winken
I've a few more questions but I could just think of these atm. =)

BTW, great job on Kanotix. It's a great distro. Though, I'm still a n00b at linux, but I've used other distros and I've always like Debian. This just makes it easier. Sehr glücklich
I'm sorry if these were already answered in FAQ/wiki and I skipped through them. I've been looking at them a lot, but not 100% thoroughly.
Thanks for any help on this!

IronTank,

the screenshot you're refering to illustrates virtualization (in this case, "empowered" by VMware).

If you install an emulator software such as VMware Server/Workstation oder qemu/kqemu, you can have a virtual Windows machine inside your Kanotix machine. It will behave like a real Windows computer, and you can run all Windows applications in their "natural" environment. (That's what the screenshot is showing.) If you only want to run some Windows programs, wine is the right thing for you. However, wine doesn't support all Windows programs.

Thanks for reply arlekin and ockham23.

Does this mean I don't need to install windows at all if I use VMware?
I'm really new to this, if you could please elaborate more on it. Smilie

I rarely use IE but I need it to do some HW from school, and windows is handy for a few games. Otherwise, it's kanotix all the way. I tried using Wine to run "gunbound" once and it didn't work, I only had linux installed that time and didn't know if it required windows or not or if i just used wine wrong.

Thanks again for any help available!! Smilie

You still have to install it, but it will run from a container file on your hard drive. For details see http://www.vmware.com/products/ws/
