I do a nitely d-u. On wed. I did it with no errors, but when I booted up thurs. kde took about 10 min. to fully load and any apts I run browsers games kwrite etc take many minutes to load. I saw the prob re kanotix-graphics, but I wasn't really using it because I was having probs trying to figure out how to get splashy-kanotix, although last nite trying that fix again splashy was found and k-g installed correctly. Still did not fix prob. Ran du-fixed-h2, upgraded kernel, install graphics ran all fixes in the script, still the prob. I suspect reinstalling kde or xorg would probably fix the prob, but I am noobie enough to know I am not sure how to take approach without possibly killing everything. By the way evrything does work, just very very sloow. Thanxs for any help I can get. |

Since all that is required is for the user to say 'y' to the /etc/fonts/font.conf question to avoid this issue, I just put that on the dist-upgrade warning information stuff that the script shows.
The fix itself is only necessary once the error happened, and since it's easy to avoid the error, I think I won't add more, the script is getting pretty long at this point. |

Tried:"apt-get update && apt-get install fontconfig/testing fontconfig-config/testing libfontconfig1/testing
apt-get dist-upgrade", and I was going to get 14 removes. Tried: "apt-get install --reinstall -o DPkg::Options::=--force-confmiss -o DPkg::Options::=--force-confnew fontconfig fontconfig-config ", and I go alot of "failed to write cache" and to see fontconfig.log which shows as follows:

I don't know about the rest of you, but I usually say 'y' to most all of those d-u questions, so that I get the new config files etc. I only say 'n' to config files that I know that I have configured to my personal needs. If I'm unsure, I still say 'y' and it's all good. |

LRC:
apt-get update
apt-get install fontconfig/testing fontconfig-config/testing libfontconfig1/testing
apt-get install fontconfig fontconfig-config libfontconfig1
apt-get dist-upgrade
that should do it, say 'y' to the new fonts.conf question. |

Saying 'y' could delete configs that have been done by kano? We won't know which these might be. |

Thanx for your help. Used aptitude instead of apt-get (a-g wanted to remove about 14 apts, aptitude degraded them), and everything works fine now. By the way, saying yes to evrything can cause you grief. Ran into that situation in one of the first upgrades I ever did. All I remember now is that it radically change the look and or behavior of what ever it was that got upgraded. |

The default answer (when you just hit enter) is n = to keep the current config files. I did a lot of dist-upgrades this way and never had problems except this fontconfig-issue.
Agreed, unless you know exactly what your saying yes to, and the changes it makes. |

I always use the "D" option to see the differences where you can often see that the changes are benign so I accept them. Only when I guess that the changes look to be overwriting some specific kanotix configuration do I reject the new file (which has been very rare) and I have not had a problem yet. I always remember which files are affected and then I can restore the file.dpkg-old anyhow. |
