ockham,
there is no changes RC1 - RC2, that i know of to justify RC1 working and RC2 not.

@devil: testcd doesn't help if the computer doesn't even make it to the grub screen. But I agree with you that it's not the software that's causing the errors. However, RC2 is over 700MB, and some optical drives may have problems burning/reading the cd.

AlienX has the same problem as I do. I just now burned RC2 for the third time at 12X. MD5sum is correct. In K3b I set it up for overburn. I watched the megabyte number on the screen to see if it would burn the full 702 MB and it did. K3b said the burn was successful. However, the third time was not charm. The boot did not get so far as the splash screen. Like before it got only to the point of telling me, Grub loading, Please wait. At that point the computer shut down in a warm boot. Then started up again to repeat the cycle.

fuzzybud, did you burn the disk in dao-mode (disk at once)?
that is important because of the extra high compression mode that kanotix uses.
recommended is 8x speed, but with good cd-r 12 should be no problem, but dao is crucical.

In K3b I chose DAO rather than Automatic. When the disk was burning the message said SAO at 12X. From googling around I see that SAO is the same as DAO. I burned another disk with the verify box checked. I still get the same result as before. I have never burned a disk from the command line. I quess this would be the time to learn.

Yes, I checked the md5sum of the downloaded iso before the burn and K3b in the verify mode checks the md5sum of the burned disk against the iso file. The iso file and the burned disk are equal.

fuzzybud, you could do two things to help us solve this mystery: Test the cd with a different computer and post the output of "lspci" from your Via Epia 5000.

Kano, the second ethernet card is on my little VIA EPIA 5000 computer. I added that second card today just to try a different ethernet connection. It didn't work any better than the one on the motherboard. The Rhine 111 is a D-Link DFE-530TX. For several months now in all the new versions of Linux I have tried it takes 5 to 10 minutes before my computer connects to the Internet, not nice. Then if I take the time to write and email or write to a forum it takes another 5 to 10 before the computer connects again to send it. I found that FreeBSD and PC-BSD connect without a problem. Also older versions of Linux connect without a problem. At the moment I am writing to you using Knoppix 3.4 as a live CD. All of this is a different but annoying problem from the one I have been writing about on this threadd. That is that the EPIA 5000 computer can not boot RC2 but did boot RC1. My neighbor has an AMD Athlon XP+ with the via chipset that booted RC2 without a problem. I don't know why the EPIA5000 can't boot RC2.

We started with one issue, now we have two. Number one is grub rebooting with RC2. Assuming the cd is o.k., I can think of only one explanation: the optical drive cannot read CD-ROMs that come very close to the theoretical limit of slightly over 703 MB. You said that you have two Via Epia machines. Are the optical drives identical?

Number two is the network problem. You write you observe erratic behavior only with recent distros. Suspect #1is still IRQ handling. Does booting RC1 with cheat codes "noapic" or "routeirq" improve your network connection? If there's no difference, we should take a closer look at your router. TCP/IP has been updated to ipv6, and the router may not be able to establish a stable link with your computer. Type
Code:
ifconfig
and look for dropped packets.

I don't know if it has already been said: pppoe needs to be reconfigured after every reboot.

@devil: That's similar to what fuzzybud wrote. Maybe it's the same problem, and AlienX doesn't even get a grub boot screen.
@AlienX: Please specify your hardware. Can you test the cd with another computer?

it has a gigabyte motherbird, via c3 800 processor and 768 mb ram

the md5sum is correct and I burned two cds, I have only this computer to test Winken

AlienX and I are basically the same. My via C3 is 533 MHz. and I have 512MB of RAM. Ockham23, I ran out and bought a different brand of DVD burner but RC2 still would not boot any better than before. What I had/have is a Plextor PX740A and the new one is a LG SuperMulti. While I was at the computer store I bought a new desktop that will be delivered tomorrow. It is a modest AMD 64 Sempron 2800+ with an AM2 Biostar motherboard something about T-force 6100. That should get me back in the ball game. I will let you know after I get it online.

I found another problem. In order for some games to have sound (e.g. ppracer), after every reboot the following is needed:

# gamix
# alsactl store

ockham23, just for the record I booted RC2 just fine from my new Sempron AM2 computer. The booting problem had to be something in the C3 motherboard. That board works fine with disks under 700MB so I will be careful in the future with that computer. It will be a few weeks before I use it as I love this new computer. The long delay connecting to the Internet is still with me. I am sure that has something to do with the routers in this apartment building. I will solve that one a little bit later. Thanks for the help. Your help and others like you is a very good reason to stick with Kanotix. Kano of course is a big reason to stick around too.

fuzzybud, thanks for the accolades. RC3 iso is just out and it is under 700MB. So you can test my theory about your Via Epia machine not being able to handle CD-Rs larger than 700MB. And if it doesn't boot, well, I will have to come up with another theory.

ockham23, success with booting RC3 on the little epia 5000 computer. And a bonus too. This little guy was able to get connected to the Internet in only two minutes, normally five to ten minutes. I have no doubt that RC3 will boot on my new desktop but I want to see about the connect time to the Internet. Maybe something is different in this new Kanotix. One of the mysteries about the slow connect time is that PC-BSD always connected normally and the new versions of Linux got hung up for that 5 to minutes. Then if I wrote a note like this I would have to wait another 5 to 10 minutes to submit it. I don't know what FreeBSD does differently. Thanks again.

Edited: On the Sempron computer it took three minutes to get connected. The problem still persists but it is better. I will keep trying.

fuzzybud, now that you have at least three computers in your room, you can set up your own router: Connect the Via Epia machine that has to NICs to the router and boot it off the Knoppix 3.4 cd. Then launch the Knoppix Terminal Server from the Knoppix menu. This script will start a DHCP server and activate IP forwarding & masquerading, very similar to Windows Internet Connection Sharing. Set up the second NIC with static IP address 192.168.2.1 and connect your new computer to it with a cross-over patch cable. As a result, all Internet traffic will be routed through the Knoppix machine that has no problems connecting to the Internet.
