Did dist-upgrade today and everything appeared OK.
Then upgraded kernel to 2.6.18 via Kanotix-Update-GUI
and NVIDA driver via the same. Since then the screen
resolution remains at 800x600 instead of my normal
1024x768. I've tried Kanotix's change-res to no avail.
Any ideas anyone? |

More info:
Screen resolution seems Ok until the NVIDIA driver (9625 beta)
kicks in. After that resolution is stuck at 800x600.
How can I downgrade the NVIDIA driver to the previous version? |

comment out the driver number line in the script, and uncomment the driver you want, then run the script installer again. this doesn't always work, but it does sometimes work. |

But try fix-res.sh 1024x768
I haven't used that for a long time, but that's how I set my initial res when needed.
I've had no problems with the new nvidia driver so far in terms of resolution, seems about the same to me. |

I also use the fix-res script. It was written by Kano and modified by slh last year and it works fine. (The change-res script is based on fix-res and incorporates "Screen Size Horizontal Vertical Sync" or so says the shell script's comments. I've not needed this additional feature and so I haven't used change-res.)
Here are the commands:
Code:
$ sux
$ (root password)
# fix-res 1024x768
Ctrl + Alt + Backspace
Then log back in as user. |

update-scripts-kanotix.sh
install-nvidia-debian.sh
installs (currently) the latest stable driver. You can change it in the script itself with the VER=... lines.
mcedit /usr/local/bin/install-nvidia-debian.sh |

For anyone whose interested I upgraded to kernel-2.6.18-slh-up-1.
h2:
Thanks for your input.
Just had a quick look at fix-res.sh script on Kano's script page.
Apart from the fact that Kano recommends it shouldn't be used
it looks to me as if it merely sets up xorg.conf. My xorg.conf
is exactly the same as it was before I installed the new NVIDIA
driver.
I seem to remember that NVIDIA could be manually configured
but that was a while ago and anyway I'd probably be out of my
depth trying that.
So tomorrow I'll try removing the NVIDIA driver using Kanotix->
Configure->Display and then make the necessary alterations to
Kano's script and attempt to install the previous driver. |

Thanks Kano.
Updated your scripts and and ran install-nvidia-debian
and the resolution is no back to 1024x768. This was the
method I normally use to update the NVIDIA driver.
The kernel update script offers the choice to install the
NVIDIA driver which I usually don't accept but this time
I did accept. Perhaps I should have updated your scripts
before accepting the option?
Anyway thanks again to everyone for their help quick response. |

clubex, if you use h2's du-fixes-h2.sh script to update your kernel next time, it will update kano's scripts before you accept to install your nvidia drivers |

The Beta drivers are for testing compiz with AIGLX (-c option needed in that case too), but currently I just worte a script that does not require this and just installs Xgl. For more info join IRC. |
