My existing mobo or processor have died, bios won,t even initiate, checked what I can, power OK to mobo hd etc won,t power down have to unplug it. So now looking at new mobo, seems like a good time to change to AMD and NVidia, I have been researching but it is so slooow on an ancient 433 Celeron. the new AMD AM2 looks good but an older 939 card means I can use my DDR memory. anyone have any advice on what or what not to get I am looking at middle range stuff not top end. obviously Kanotix compatability is priority.
Thanks

great prices now on 939 stuff. Enthusiasts may claim to be able to really see any difference between ddr and ddr2, but I can't.
Dual core amd for between US 160 and 190, 3800/4200. Spend much more for not much more speed.
Mobos: many very nice 939, I can personally recommend as fully working: msi neo4 platininum. But any top end 939 from abit, asus is going to do the job really well. Avoid any via chipset based mobo.
I like buying top end stuff from 1 or 2 years ago, since the price has dropped massively, the latest bios revisions have fixed any bios issues usually, and it's still the same exact top quality.
The good thing about going this route is that you get to pay middle range prices but end up with top end components, just slightly older than this year's top end.
With the money you save, get yourself a nice thermaltake copper heatsink with quiet fan and a tube of artic-cooling mx-1 thermal compound so you won't even hear your new box. |

Why do you say
Zitat:
Avoid any via chipset based mobo.
That's what I have. (I think) ASUS A7V400-MX MB with AMD Athlon(tm) XP 1800+ CPU and VT8378 [KM400/A] Chipset Host Bridge
I know that Googleearth wouldn't work with my system because of the integrated graphics, but other than that, what are the downsides of via? |

Thanks h2 eventually ordered a Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9-RH NF4, a lot of places ( I use) don't have the MSI platinum neo 4. Just went for a single core 3500 Athlon and a Gigabyte 7300 GT card which should be quiet in my Sonata box. I don't do any intensive processing to justify nearly twice the price for a twin core. |
