I did a dist-upgrade today after not doing one in months and now all my main KDE fonts are almost transparent. I can't figure out how to fix it. I tried changing the schema back to default, shutting off anti-alising, and still can't figure it out. Everything else is working fine except for Liquid Weather on SuperKaramba is complaining that Pyqt is no longer installed but that is the least of my problems. Please help me with any idea's as I am out. BTW I am only using testing sources on this particular computer (i just removed the sid ones), and had a few errors with kicker during the d-u, no others (I don't remember what they were). Thanks alot.

Cheers,
Mike

Suppose, you followed standard procedures, so just one hint which was around a few weeks ago:

open kcontrol, go to the fonts setting check/uncheck the antialiasing box and save. Then undo what you have done, and save that again. Restart X.

Sounds like a Uri Geller trick, but it helped some people.

Part 2 - You need to manually remove everything to do with liquid weather then reinstall the latest version of liquid weather - 13.2.

K so I tried re-adding the sid sources again and d-u as a long shot but I still have the same error. The d-u fails and apt-get -f install errors with with
Code:
Preparing to replace kicker 4:3.5.5a-2 (using ../kicker_4%3a3.5.5a.dfsg.1-1_i386.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement kicker ...
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/kicker_4%3a3.5.5a.dfsg.1-1_i386.deb (--unpack):
trying to overwrite '/usr/share/apps/kicker/pics/kside.png', which is also in package kanotix-graphics-common
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)

Removing that kside.png file doesn't change anything btw and trying to remove kanotix-graphics-common produces another error and won't let me uninstall
Code:
You might wnat to run 'apt- get -f install' to correct there:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
kdebase: Depends: kicker (>= 4:3.5.5a.dfsg.1-1) but 4:3.5.5a-2 is to be installed
E: Unmet dependendcies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).

any ideas?

Thanks

Maybe try

Code:
apt-get install --reinstall kdebase-data

or

Code:
apt-get install --reinstall -o DPkg::Options::=--force-confmiss -o DPkg::Options::=--force-confnew kdebase-data

Do

Code:
wget -O/etc/apt/sources.list http://kanotix.com/files/fix/sources.list

apt-get update

and try again, I know there is "not" much difference, but, ya never know, it might work.

This is not really a dependency issue. Instead two packages have the same file -> /usr/share/apps/kicker/pics/kside.png
The problem is not that the file actually exists but rather that 2 debs are trying to put the same file there and apt won't allow it to happen. This is exactly why a dist-upgrade is sometimes a pain in the arse. Hopefully you find a solution.

There is something that might work but it involves using the --force option for dpkg. You are certain to find some people that object to this method although I've done it on numerous occasions without ill effect. You've been warned.
As a last resort:
Code:
dpkg -i --force-overwrite   /var/cache/apt/archives/kicker_4%3a3.5.5a.dfsg.1-1_i386.deb
apt-get -f install

Once again - using --force w/ dpkg can be trouble.

Ya, I was hesitent to do that because that is what I did on the first d-u and then I had the font problem. But i did it again and the d-u finished but my font problem is still there. If open the K menu, all the fonts are gone or transparent, same with the desktop and context menu's alike. I'm hoping there is a easy way to fix this. thanks

devil gave a solution for fonts in the german speaking forum. Don't know if that applies for you:
Code:
rm -rf /etc/fonts ; apt-get install --reinstall --yes -o DPkg::Options::=--force-confmiss -o DPkg::Options::=--force-confnew fontconfig fontconfig-config
Hope you can sort your problems out,

Why not just use h2's script for d-u, especially since you haven't du-d in a while.

The d-u did finish I've just never had a problem like this one before. I've heard a lot of good things about that script but I would prefer to do it manually so I know what is going on and can learn from it.

Thanks all for the help, if there are any other idea's please let me know.

What about:

apt-get remove --purge kanotix-graphics-common
apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get install kanotix-graphics-common

But I don't know how many apps might be removed by the first command. Just an idea to get rid of the dependency problem.

And be sure you are in init 3.

Edit:
If you have gtk-qt-engine installed you need a
apt-get -f install
that everything is ok with today's sid repo.

the kanotix graphics stuff, plus the font fixes, are too complicated to explain, use my script and it will run all those fixes. Avoid trying stuff at random or it might not be fixable at all.

The only safe way to do dist-upgrades is to either always do them in a timely fashion, say once a week, or once every two weeks, keeping up on all the latest fixes etc, or to just not bother and either use my script, or just do the update-install process with the new kanotix release. Personally, trying to keep up and or remember all the various fixes is far too much for me, that's why I wrote the script, so I didn't have to remember them.

There's no way I can remember what fix goes with what kanotix version, it's way too much information to keep in my head, so if you don't keep up on it, you have to pick another way to handle it.

After doing that, do the kde font alias switch fix again just to be on the safe side.

And if you are using gtk2-engines-gtk-qt, please, purge it, remove it, and never reinstall it.

Thanks, I'll try your script on it when I get home, will it still apply the fixes if the d-u is up to date? Because the d-u's did finish.
I normally keep my computers up to date but I had with moving and problems getting my internet online at my new place (I'm sure we've all had to deal with our isp's) it's been a while before I could get back on track.
Thanks for the help

I have frequently wound up with weedy fonts after an upgrade and have been known to reinstall newer installs in frustration. fix-fonts only works for the slow X shutdown for me. But for scratchy fonts you can try the

Code:
dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig-config

There are questions there, two important ones and I think one even mentions weedy or scratchy fonts if you are using a font setting for LCD when you are CRT or vice versa. I don't remember the exact questions or how I answered them but I do get it right when I run it.

1) Do yourself a favor and forget fixing. Download the latest RC and do an Update-Install.
2) Never again touch the sources.list that comes with Kanotix, except you're told so by someone who really knows.
3) Forget dreaming of Debian testing being something solving problems, instead of creating them.

Thanks for catching that one slam, I missed it.

As with doing dist-upgrades in x or kde etc, certain myths seem to insist on lingering, the testing myth being one of them, but forget them, case after case proves that trying to change things for some reason that is not correct tends to lead to system failure.

If you want to run testing, then download the netinstaller for debian etch, which is very pleasant, very easy to use, and install etch. That's testing.

Same for stable. And if your goal is a stable system in terms of upgrades, then download and install etch now, and when etch rolls over to stable, go to stable, and stay there. That will keep your system stable for the next 3 years.

And if you want to use some of the kanotix scripts, just download them and use them, most only need to be used once, for setup stuff.

I'm not sure if the graphics installer scripts are safe to use with testing or stable, but I'd assume that they are fine for at least testing, but if that's not correct, someone let me know.

Kanotix IS debian UNstable, not debian testing, so keep that in mind. You use kanotix because you want to use debian unstable.

And du's in x can and do cause full system failure on a routine basis, month in and month out, IRC routinely gets the latest user who destroyed their system that way looking for help [Mike Shepard - I'm not saying you did this, just that that is another common misconception and error some users insist on practicing, until their system fails, then of course noone hears from them again...]

Ya that was my final plan if all else failed (which is where I am at) so I will be going that route. And also it's not that I don't understand the sources list and don't know. I was actually curious to compare my other kanotix-sid computers with only using the testing souces on this one. I actually learned about it from reading through the wiki. I usually stay up on my d-u's except for the whole moving and internet problems but this font thing just kinda caught me off guard, i saw some other posts about the dissappearing fonts but their fixes didn't work either. But reguardless thanks for all the help, and I'll just do a reinstall then.

Cheers,
Mike
