I have one computer with Kanotix (remote controlled with vnc) where I have a map which I would like everybody on my lan to have access to, there are windows and Kanotix computers. So I would like to start an FTP server on the remote machine, that I think would work. The FTP server shall be started automatic when the computer starts and you shall need to have a password to have acces to the map. I have tried before to get this to work but I have not understand how.
My lan is behind a router and I don´t wnat the FTP server to be easy accesed from outside.
Can anyone help me to do this from scratch? |

Hi vilde
I am very new to Linux and still learning the bascis.
I have Kanotix server which is running Samba. Every computer in my house has access (read/write) to the second HD which is just for data. Most of the house is using Windows and I run Kanotix and windows on my laptop. Not using FTP just explorer on windows and konqueror on the Kanotix computer.

After a lot of reading in how to:s which I do not understand and trying many times without succes I made a samba server work very easy by using the script in KDE menu under KANOTIX Network/Internet.
Sorry to say but even if there are a lot of guides and how to:s regarding Linux it's a real mess to try to do something and make it work if you don't know very much. The how to:s are very often pointing to other how to:s or refering to other guides and the most of them are not written from scratch. All this configurating files which contains rows and rows of text which do not mean anything for a normal computer user. I have tryed and used Linux since Red Hat 5, I don't know when that was but it's some years ago and I have managed it because I believe in free software and don't like Windows. But I'm still a user, not a programmer and I don't know very much how programs or network works.
The reasons I have maneged to make my home system work so good now is because the nearly always very good responses here on Kanotix forums together with a good distro "Kanotix" and the scripts from Kano and aslo H2. |
